On Tour '92

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Dave's notebook #20 is a smaller notebook then his standard. Measuring 5.5" x 8.5" it would appear easily portable. And as Dave mentioned in his update on January 16, he would take pages from the notebook if he needed a piece of paper to write something on. And it shows with notebook #20 - the cover says 115 sheets of paper, and only 36 were scanned, 54 were blank and 27 were missing. Page #53/54 was ripped out and only a bit remained to show the place it once held.

Being smaller than his usual notebook, plus the sketches of people in it, he must've carried it around with him:

Notebook 20 page 1 and 3
Notebook 20 page 5 and 7
On a couple of the pages he sketched some ideas for the 1992 tour and Free Cerebus:

Notebook 20 page 9 and 27

Dave should consider releasing some sketchbooks. These are really cool.

I love these! If there are more sketches like these in the notebooks, I hope you'll post them.
