Mind Game IV

Hi Everybody!

Don't Forget:
Bundle names not final...

Details here. And now:

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Dave Sim’s 7th Cerebus notebook, that covered Cerebus #59 through 69 and had 160 pages scanned in, has some pages on Mind Game III. Then we saw pages 66 and 67 which in Mind Game III back in May of 2016. We can skip over page 68 for now as it doesn’t have much on it, and go right to page 69:

Notebook #7, page 69

Most of that internal dialogue stayed the same. And the parts that were crossed out were indeed not in Cerebus #63. So we never got to hear “Remember the time Cerebus got the runs and it came out all Bloody. That only happened once.”

In the Cerebus Biweekly reprint of Cerebus #63, Dave said this about the next page: “Still writing Cerebus’ internal monologue with no idea where I’m going to put it with mere days left in the month.” The above page didn’t make the cut for the biweekly reprint.

Notebook #7, page 70

The spoken dialogue is circled, the internal dialogue is not. More dialogue crossed out. Some about Cerebus getting the runs after drinking, and the other about Cerebus thinking “Sophia is going to wake up any minute now and wonder where Cerebus is. Cerebus doesn’t care. She’ll want to know what’s wrong.”
