Dave Sim contributed to all 32 issues of CANAR (Comic Art News And Reviews) published by John Balgé (1954-2014) between September 1972 and April 1976. Balgé had got to know the sixteen year old Dave Sim through Harry Kremer’s Now & Then Books comic shop in Kitchener, Ontario. Balgé, Sim and Kremer travelled together to comics conventions in the US and Canada interviewing many prominent comic creators of the day, making the back issues of CANAR a treasure trove of interviews with the likes of Will Eisner, Russ Heath, Harvey Kurtzman, Barry Windsor-Smith, Mike Kaluta, Gil Kane, Berni Wrightson, Howard Chaykin and others.

Wow. Sixteen and one-third years old and he was already more literate, erudite, and well-rounded than most college graduates are today. (Of course, my father graduated high school at age 16, in 1938, and had already studied Latin, so it's kind of a generational thing, I guess.)
Regardless, these CANAR reprints are a fascinating insight into the already brilliant (even if somewhat derivative) mind of the young Dave Sim.

Disappointed but not surprised to read such harsh comments towards Kirby's Fourth World books. Thrunk was probably as close to parodying Kirby that Dave ever got, besides aping Barry Windsor-Smith's Kirbyisms. Dave's style and taste has long seemed to prefer a more realistic-cartoony approach over bombast. Still, I wonder if he has ever tempered his opinion to the New Gods work in the decades since.
