...I was off to the races or so I thought until I did the second strip. All that cross-hatching made it look like something out of Charles Dickens' Bleak House... instead of a typical Canadian suburban home. It was a hard lesson in comic strip design... the "look" needs to be versatile enough to convey a range of settings. My choice of dip pen -- a C-6 Speedball nib -- was okay for lettering but not enough for "doing" Aislin or Roy Peterson. The strip went way onto my mental back burner.

Barbara Frum (1937-1992) CBC radio host of "As It Happens", a Canadian institution at the time... uber liberal (like most Canadians). Her son is David Frum. a conservative commentator who severed briefly in the George W. Bush White House and reportedly was the one who coined the term "Axis of Evil" to describe Iran, Iraq and North Korea in the President's first State of the Union Address.

Ironic, eh?

As a Canadian, I don't know where Dave gets the idea that most Canadians are "uber liberal". Oh, right; he reads (only) The National Post.

As a Canadian, I don't think he's wrong. Certainly our Conservatives are a lot more liberal than those folks down south. Or am I grading on a curve?

As a Canadian, I suggest that Dave and Michael are so far to the right that they can't tell the difference between middle-of-the-road and liberal. And let's remember that our Conservatives are also our government.

Eh. As a United Statesian, I object to David Frum's being called a conservative. He's a Wilsonian (make the world safe for Western - that is, liberal - values, through economic and military aggression) progressive/liberal interventionist. There was absolutely nothing conservative about the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Frum is a well-known Washington courtier pundit of the neo-con persuasion. If anyone has ever been more wrong in predictions and policies, it's only his fellow-travelers. The seminal neo-cons were all reformed Trotskyists, as contemptuous of democratic accountability as neo-cons as they were before they grew impatient with liberals' former hesitancy to embrace war.
