PAUL SLADE:
Published between 1981 and 1984, Dave's six Swords of Cerebus volumes were his first attempt to collect the book in a more permanent form. He gave each story included in these volumes a prose introduction, explaining where the book stood when he'd been working on that particular issue and how he was thinking of its prospects at the time. We're currently covering the intros from Swords volume 3. Also check out the full 'Swords Of Cerebus' Introductions Index.
"The nice thing about tragedy is that it is so close to comedy," say Dave.
Next week: Life lessons from Gene Day.

That (or those) duo-tone issue/s was/were just awful. Thank goodness Dave abandoned that art board quickly.
What a terrible design idea by whoever marketed them.
Sean, have you written about the hassle of restoring these issues due to the duo-tone?
Hey Michael!
Here's a bit about it, with Dave weiging in in the comments.

For the new edition of V1, I worked from all print copies of the original monthly printing of the issue, with the exception of two pages from original art. The original monthly book looks waaaay better than any later printings, as someone seems to have chucked the negative by the time Swords was printed. The newly restored version looks pretty awesome, if I do say so myself.
I am curious about what the temporary studio looked like. Also, what's the studio timeline? When did Dave move into the White House?
It’s funny, during a reread this issue really stands out as having a living breathing space for Cerebus to live in. It’s something I didn’t really notice the first go round. One of the pleasures of th reread is seeing Dave create this world.
