Sick Mother

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Dave Sim's twenty-sixth Cerebus notebook covers pretty much all of Rick's Story, Cerebus #220 through 230, with Cerebus #231 being the only issue of Rick's Story not covered in it. We last saw it in This. Is a Bar. RAG. from March of this year.

Page seven of the notebook contains a sketch of Cerebus deep in thought, which appears to be used on page 87 of Rick's Story (aka page 1 of Cerebus #224) as it has the similar 'pound pound pound' text behind it. Though knowing Cerebus this could be at almost any point in Rick's Story.

Notebook #26, page 7
However, the text above it comes from Rick's Story pages 99 and 100. Well, some of it is used on those pages. It doesn't all make the final pages.

Cerebus #224, pages 13 and 14
