Cerebus Around the World and Web #57 by Oliver Simonsen

Hi, Everybody!

Oliver Simonsen:

[A lot of these images are big, so click to see some of them bigger, and others just for the fun of clicking... -Matt]

My arm is still hurting and typing with my left only, but that's nothing compared to what James is going through...

James Smith: Today this came unexpectedly in the mail! Original art from Dave Sim wishing me a speedy recovery on my stroke!

Bleeding Cool spotlights Gerhard's most prominent and full length Graphic Novel project since Cerebus https://bleedingcool.com/comics/gerhard-grant-morrison-heavy-metal/
quote from Gerhard in the article: …some of you may be wondering what ever happened to the 'Smile of the Absent Cat' story I had been working on for all that time. Well, it's in a litigious limbo that I have no say in and will in all likelihood never see print. Yet another reason that it's hard to stay motivated in the "Comics Biz"

These days "Game of Thrones" comes up a lot when a Cerebus film is mentioned, especially so Peter Dinklage - so it seems somewhat fitting to mention Dinklage is actually playing an animated coldhearted mercenary pig in the upcoming movie "hitpig" based on script/character designs by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Berkeley Breathed. I don't think any shots from the movie are done or have been revealed yet, but here is some gorgeous concept art

The Director is Cinzia Angelini and if curious you can see many of her references for inspiration assembled for the film here https://www.pinterest.com/angelini0453/hitpig/
and in another coinky dink: she did a similar production setup as ours for the short film "Mila" that she just finished - a volunteer-based project that features the largest independent virtual animation studio ever created consisting of 350 animation professionals from 35 countries. It's a 20 minute film and took 10 years with sponsors and financial support. It's astounding what she has accomplished - and while our modest efforts are maybe not quite as spectacular...hey, i still feel some vindication on our 10 plus years - not too shabby especially since I'm not a veteran animator and didn't know what i was doing when we started:). Our film is currently 70 minutes on no budget with so far over 200 volunteers from every corner of the world (haven't counted how many countries). So if i may pat myself on the back just a little and give it up for the incredible crew making it all happen and who teach me so much:).

[Actually, Ger emailed me that he's out of town, so give him until Tuesday. -Matt (and I'm not just saying that to give myself a head start on landing one of these...)]

Margaret Liss: I even got the letter to go along with the color first fifth portfolio set I got. Yes, still with the envelope. Yes, I will be bagging and boarding this.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/cerebus/permalink/3545385298862153/

Margaret Liss: Going thru the collection part five? How many weekends have there been no Bs games?
The first poster I open and ohhhh, signed by Dave. And judging by his signature it must be early to mid 1980s. That is the Countess Michelle poster.
Than the next poster is basically the same but says Like No Other Comic on it in red text. I e always seen both folder. I’m thinking the like no other comic was sent to comics shops, but what about the no text one? And which poster come first
https://www.facebook.com/groups/cerebus/permalink/3546815825385767/

Organizing the collection part 456: found a cool postcard. I wonder who it was sent to do I flip it over. Huh. Thanks Dave. I really wish I could’ve gone to this show.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/cerebus/permalink/3545436242190392/

Margaret Liss: Things I find organizing the collection part 1,097: a sketch Dave and Ger did for me at SPACE in 2005.
Question for my younger self: why did you bring a fourth printing of the phonebook instead of the first printing?
https://www.facebook.com/groups/cerebus/permalink/3530675836999766/

Margaret Liss in the comments: A pic of Dave doing the sketch for me. At the time I had a potato of a camera, plus the backlight didn't really help

Margaret Liss: Picture by Josh Flowers iirc. . .

Ron Essler: behind Dave was the hotel's swimming pool. At one point a couple of girlfriends to two creators that were at the show, went down to the pool and decided to go swimming.(I think, but I'm not sure, that they just stripped off their clothes and swam in their underwear.) Dave and Ger looked once, and continued signing and sketching. Then Jeffrey Tundis said, "Dave, backstroke." And as a single unit, Dave and Ger swung around and watched for a few minutes and then swung back and continued signing and sketching. [I think Dave's looking in this photo actually... -"Ron"]

Jeff Seiler: That was my first S.P.A.C.E con. I was really nervous and was fulfilling a request from Billy Beach that Dave would draw a head shot of Prince Keef. The whole time that Dave did it, he and Lenny talked in minutiae about the Torah.

Margaret Liss: One of my fave bits of my collection are the couple of things I have signed by Harry Kremer. I never met him, but for his help to Dave in the early days of Cerebus, he’ll always have my thanks.
This note was mailed to a Cerebus fan and it was written on a back of a letter size sheet of paper that had a promo for Swords of Cerebus on it.

Don VanHorn in the comments: Harry was a good friend. He shared a lot of stories with me over the years. I miss him a lot.
Margaret Liss: Don! I think back in the day you helped me out with a lot of info on the Friends of Cerebus! And iirc you were the webmaster of the Now & Then Comics website as well. If you have stories you'd like to share here, feel free.
Don VanHorn: Margaret, yeah that would be me. I lost a lot of my passion for collecting comics after Harry passed. I fed off his enthusiasm. His love of collecting and fandom was infectious.
James Artimus Owen: Harry was just the best. Dave sure lucked out when it came to his early supporters and mentors.

Margaret Liss: Aardvark Update for July 1984. Letter sized paper, folded as it was mailed out in an envelope.

Paul Poirier in the comments: Cutey Bunny was A-V?
Margaret Liss: according to another press release it looks like the plans were cancelled.

James Windsor-smith: 3.99 dollars for shipping?? Hard pass!

Margaret Liss: Here you go, free shipping:

David Hartman: Anybody heard of an "anti-folk" musician named Jeffrey Lewis? Me neither, but my friend's wife loves his music and said he mentioned Cerebus in a song called Cult Boyfriend. Lyrics below. https://www.facebook.com/groups/cerebus/permalink/3528639420536741/

Shannon Wheeler in the comments: Lewis is great. His Chelsea Hotel song is amazing. Totally sincere guy - and funny as hell. He draws some great comics too. I’d think Dave would respect him.

[So I looked, and Dave made between fifty cents and a dollar apiece for these magnets. (Except the pre#1 Cerebus. I dunno what he got paid for that, I don't sell that one.) anyway, you can buy your own from the AMOC TeePublic shop. All profit goes to Dave. -Matt]

Chad Lambert in the comments: Wow! I never knew the #4 variant existed. Was that through Comixpress?
Margaret Liss replies: It was not offered through Comixpress. In fact, it was never printed. I had the art for zombified Cerebus Archive #4 so I posted it in a few places.
This wasn't published either:
