The Regency Edition has arrived!

Hi, Everybody!

Got word from The Waverly Press.

The Regency Edition has arrived:
The books arrived and they look great!
There is a lot of work ahead examining each book for flaws and putting the packages together.

To make up for the delay every book will come with a matched numbered art print featuring a new work by Dave (see below), and a new foil trading card exclusive to this book.

The cover is a recent revised version by Gerhard, first time in print I think.
The silver page edge gilding is really nice!

So there ya go.

Can't wait to lay my grubby little hands on it and despoil it like I would a 19-year-old virgin (if there is such a thing these days).

Time for Dave & Waverly to put out a version for comic shops.
Next Church & State I / II, Kickstarter and then Comic Shop versions.
We have been asking Dave to put out hardcover versions of these for years.
This is a money making format.
This worked.
The time is now.

Does Dave write a new introduction to the Regency Edition?

It's a great looking book!

This looks great. Will it be listed through Diamond? How can I buy a copy?

I think it would be a mistake to make these books available through other channels so soon. I think people signed up for this also because of the exclusivity, and it could also be detrimental to the sales of AV’s own High Society Edition; one of the few books selling steadily, if we take Dave’s word for it. Maybe another offer through Waverly again in a few years?
Just to make it clear, I did not sign up for this edition, so I’m not ‘protecting’ my own ‘investment’. It’s just my point of view.

I agree with you Anonymous @00:01. This is some boutique $#!+. I doubt any comics fan will find that quality wrapping IFC at a local comics shop. And, even despite the SPAWN 10 hiccups, Waverly is probably the only company that has the expertise, interest, and inclination to create an item such as this one.

It’s like Walter Matthau said about a making films once, “You can’t make these like sausages.” This quality hardcover seems to fit under that category.

For the record: I didn’t buy a copy either.

Brian: if you don't mind me asking, why did you choose not to purchase the HS:RE?

Brian West said...

That’s easy to answer, Dave. It was the price. Still, I don’t begrudge anyone who could afford to purchase the item.

Dave Kopperman said...

My general hope is that the success of the HS:RE will encourage Dave to release a more GM friendly price-point hardcover - he'd always maintained they wouldn't sell, but if an über-deluxe $200-minimum piece sold out in a couple of days even without the support of die-hard fans like yourself (I'm assuming you're a die-hard fan, here, Brian - correct me if I'm wrong), then a $40 hardcover would probably sell well AND steadily.

The quick sale of this edition is promising, Dave. I hope fans who were able to snag a copy will share their thoughts about the product here and/or at FB. Would be worthwhile to see what actual customers have to say about it.

(I would call myself a volunteer first, a fan second. I do what I can to help support Dave and his associates, if that makes sense.)

So a question:

On May 23rd, a custom bound set of two hardcovers with the first four phonebooks sold on eBay for $200.
These were not first edition printings or remastered printings, just four copies bound with two phone books in each book.

Is this an affordable price point?
No frills, no extras, no fancy dust jackets or clamshell cases.

Just regular ol' phone books.

Just curious, I'd like some feedback on this.

Steve

Steve, I think it depends on how much you want hardcovers. I think that it also depends on which volumes. Regardless, $200 seems a bit high, especially if the comics are used, which they almost assuredly are.

On Amazon Canada, the Marvel Omnibus books sell for between $110 and $150. Now, they usually have twice the page count of a Cerebus phonebook, and they're in colour. On the other hand, Marvel's fanbase is orders of magnitude greater than Cerebus's. On the third hand, the Direct Market edition of Sword of Cerebus In Hell? sold 350 copies, which suggests there's no large audience for Cerebus.

Looking at black-and-white volumes: Amazon sells Stuck Rubber Baby for $30 in hardcover; at 240 pages, it's the same length as the later phonebooks. A Contract With God is $30 for 208 pages in hardcover. A hardcover From Hell is $50 for 560 pages, the size of the earlier phonebooks. A hardcover Puma Blues is under $40 for 576 pages, but list price is $50.

Too high a price and you're selling only to the True Front-Facing Believers; casual fans aren't gonna drop over $100 on a book they've never heard of. Too low a price and the project can't recoup its costs. I suggest that a price of $50 per hardcover phonebook is reasonable.

Anyone have any contact info for Waverly? I cant locate the email from when I purchased it. I think I received someone else's copy. Lot of extra stuff in the box.
