Silverspoon? Maybe?

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Not what you asked for, but it is what you’re going to get: more pages from Dave Sim’s sixth notebook he used in the creation of Cerebus. The notebook covers Cerebus #49 through 59 and had 158 pages scanned in, so we’ve got plenty to look at. Even after we wrapped up looking at the thumbnails for the entirety of Cerebus #53.

There were a couple of pages in that long look that we skipped because they didn’t deal with Cerebus #53. Pages 39 and 40 were two of those. Page 39 is page one of the Silverspoon story in Cerebus #52, his only long appearance in the actual issues. He did appear in cameos in issues #43 and 300, but non speaking roles for a couple panels at most.

And while it looks like it belongs in the Silverspoon story in Cerebus #53, that thumbnail doesn’t look like any of the finished pages.

The next page isn’t Silverspoon related, but does have the guy that appears in Anything Goes #3. . .if I’m remembering that right. It is late, and I’m tired.  Typically I write these on the weekend, but here it is Tuesday, as I can’t do it tomorrow with the Bruins home opener then.

And that is a lot of Dave Sim hand lettering.
