Cerebus Volume 1 is the best written volume in the series. Definitely not the best drawn, but certainly the best written.

Cerebus Volume 1 is *not* close to being the best written volume in the series - it is, mostly, just a series of (often still very funny) gags, with little depth of characterization or world-building. And *so* much narrative ...

But damn me if it isn't already, yes, very funny in places, and amusing the rest of the time; also, there are hints of the greatness to come.

Anyway, I babble. The deadpan thought-balloon (and who knew thought-balloons could be subtle or otherwise, before Sim (and, er, Eisner, and I guess a few others) came along?) reading, "Watch wolf?" just slayed me. One of these days, I'm gonna crack open my aging collection again and see how far along that 300 issue path I'll want to travel.
