Permanent Smoke (Dave's weekly update #478)

Hi, Everybody!

Welcome back to AMOC where we TCOB about TMNT8.

First up, Iguana, how's that Big Board looking?
Sexy.

And since we're "All Turtles 8, All the Time!" Here's
Dave's Weekly Update:

You can go to Darrell's website, but all the books aren't there. Bezos has 'em, though...

(So, there was a bit of a miscommunication between Dave and CerebusOnline. But NEXT week, I swear!) ((No, REALLY!))

So, where to begin with the avalanche of faxes I've gotten from Dave...

Oh, I know! Heritage!
If you got Money, and don't wanna "do" the Kickstarter, Heritage has ALL sorts of TMNT/Cerebus goodies (click for the biggerness):
Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and Dave Sim Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 Story Page 44 Original Art (Mirage Studios, 1986).

I mean, why buy a REMASTERED REPRINT of issue #8, when for a fuckload more, you can get ONE page. Just one. (I mean the other 44 don't have such great shots of Renet's "balcony you can do Shakespeare from"...)

Dave Sim - Cerebus and TMNT Raphael Illustration Original Art (undated).

I mean, why buy a COPY of this cover when for a fuckload more, you can get the original that's been BREATHED on by Dave Sim!!!

I mean why buy a COLOURED copy of this cover, when for a (say it with me now!) FUCKLOAD more, you can get the original and some crayons (crayons not included in the auction.) and DO! IT! YOURSELF!!!

I mean, why buy a COLOURED copy of this when for a FUCK(wait for it...)LOAD more you can get the original (that has a better version of Renet's "balcony you can do Shakespeare from". Sorry Birdsong...) Plus the knockers on the back...

I mean, FUCK the Turtles. Here's a piece of Cerebus History. And it's even signed. And PERSONALIZED (as long as your name is George. Ah, fuck it, you can change your name. "Cerebus Fangirl George Liss" just ROLLS off the tongue...)

Dave Sim and Gerhard Cerebus the Aardvark #272 Cover / Page Element Illustration Original Art (Aardvark-Vanaheim, 2001).

Oy. I mean, surely only a total putz would pass up on a chance to own an original Rabbi with a Gerhard commissioned background. This one is ALMOST affordable...

Anyway, there's a BUNCH of Eastman TMNT stuff in this Auction.

But back to:

Dave faxed:
Zombies. It worked once...

Cover "B" *NOT FINISHED ART*

I faxed to Dave that since the Spawn #10 KS was around Halloween, Zombies made sense. But since this one is around St. Patrick's Day, everybody should be leprechauns, or zombie leprechauns, or zombies fighting leprechauns.

Radio silence from Kitchener on THAT idea...

SO, MARK YOUR CALENDARS. MARCH 15TH! Zombie everybody cover 24 hour Flash sale. (On, I guess the Kickstarter. NOT some other weirdo site. No Grandma/Not Grandma variants (and they say you can't teach an old Canadian new tricks...))

(I ALSO suggested he do these as prints and not covers, but nobody listens to me...)

AND, the Waverly Press is still doing the Art Card Contest:
Details as I know them.
  • They're producing a card set called "Visions of Turtles 8" with art by lots of cool folks. (Maybe even me!)
  • They are looking for members of the Cerebus community to submit their own art ideas for a trading card that will be included in the set.
  • Dave Sim is one of the judges. Our man at the Waverly Press is the other.
  • Winner gets 50 copies of their card, and "a package of fun stuff including a platinum T8 ashcan"
  • Contest runs until Friday, March 24th at midnight.
  • Submit your entries to momentofcerebus@gmail.com
So far, I've gotten ONE entry...

Okay, more faxes from Dave tomorrow (there are a significant number of them...)

ROLL THE RIGAMAROLE!!!!!!
If you have not purchased one of these:

You totally should.
Here's how to get yours:
  1. Go to www.paypal.com and PayPal Bill directly at - billmessnerloebs@gmail.com if you don't have PayPal, or PM me (Mike Jones).
  2. The amount is $50 each (we pay postage in the U.S.)
  3. Pay all Paypal fees or use "friends/family" to avoid fees.
  4. IMPORTANT! Include on PayPal, your mailing address.
  5. Sit back and wait for your print....maybe get a frame ready.
  6. First come first serve until all prints are gone. All money goes directly to Bill.
Thanks for your support.
Supplies are limited (I think. I dunno, I'm "Go-and-see-if-they're-interested-in-this-Wise-Fella" not "Let's-plan-the-conquest-of-Estarcion-Wise-Fella"...)

Oscar meets Jaka and Cerebus

MARGARET LISS:

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

We last saw a page from Dave Sim’s 14th notebook used in the creation of Cerebus comics back in February of 2021 in Bits and Pieces of Jaka’s Story. As that title suggests, notebook #14 covers Cerebus #114 through 117, the start of Jaka’s Story. So when I saw several pages of text that have Oscar mentioned in them I read through them.

Oscar doesn’t show up until Cerebus #120, but here we have two pages of Jaka, Oscar, and Cerebus having a discussion. Though most of the talk is Oscar going over his novel Princess of Palnu Jaka’s Story. A conversation that never happens in the actual comic, as Cerebus never meets Oscar. I’ve typed out the text on the pages below the scans from the notebook.

Notebook #14, page 58

Notebook #14, page 59

The text of the pages:

So there is this fellow who is elected. Like our own departed Prime Minister and Pope Cerebus Cereboise Cerebus Kereboss.

Jaka: Cerebus you mean.

Oscar: I was using the original Borealan pronunciation, my dear. For the sake In honour of charming of your guest here.  Looks at Cerebus

Cerebus: Aye

Oscar (looking at Jaka) Aye.

Anyway the story is largely about an actress. One can picture writing a good back story about a political leader, one just has difficulty picturing anyone paying money even paper money to read it reading it. An actress on the other hand is a wonderful character. Before The Trouble I knew many of the great actresses. What distinguishes them is their the gravity that they exert – the sheer magnetic animal force about them. Which is perfectly understandable of course. The nature of their profession is to draw crowds to hear beautiful untruths well-expressed, much like a poet or a prose writer, but with their own physical presence; literally every fibre of their being devoted to in service to inflicting servitude of a sort on those she draws to her, moth and flame, flame and moth.

And this particular actress has remarkable qualities and so gravitate to her the best and the brightest (as they ar e known) of their time. And this is a prime minister much like our own dearly departed, but of an extraordinary land an empire so vast that at one end of it is day and the other is night.

Wow.

Well said. And it is  as powerful as it is vast, having defeated one of the three great political forces of its day there years before and settled into a wary truce with its remaining foe, (which foe it might be added had born the to so that the Prime Minister becomes Prime Minister no longer and is instead President of the Free World (which is to say chief executive of all countries under his domination).

Anyway, the part I’m working on describes the meeting of these  two figures: this actress and this president when they are young and before either have had much success.

Sounds dull

That’s not very. . .

Cerebus!

No no, he’s quite all right, my dear. Most stories are terrible when described as one would give complicated directions to a distant destination. I can assure however that it will be a fine Read that it should be at the very least worth of me – which is the most chance at success any author could ask.

I’m finding myself able quite readily to identify with the actress in the story and being as she is a nail and an innocent which of course I am not. One is always better able to identify in literature with those character characteristics share neither one’s attributes nor one’s flaws she has never shared which most which most repel one in real life. It’s as close I and I dare say most people ever come to a state of grace. But I find I am unable to ascribe a reasonable motivation for his the Prime Minister behavior to someone invested with such power. It’s rather like picturing  the western pontiff in the old days of the Single Devine Church as a whoring young sailor. I have taken the story as far as his seeing a performance of hers and arranging a clandestine meeting.

Is he married?

Of course. The story is immoral not with two small children and wife he loves very much. If the people want to read fairy tales.

That’s disgusting why would he want an actress?

I looked at the next page in the notebook, and this discussion between Cerebus, Jaka, and Oscar doesn’t continue there.

An Overly Exhaustive Making of A TMNT8 cover Part 1 : Sketches and Pencils

Benjamin Hobbs:

The Remastered TMNT8 Kickstarter campaign is moving right along. One of the covers on the campaign was drawn and colored by me:

Over the next several weeks I'm going to show an Overly Exhaustive Progression of this cover.  This week: The sketches and start of pencils.

The first two sketches are from my sketchbook, dated November 2020. These would be from right after I heard there would be a TMNT8 campaign, but long before I had confirmed I was doing a cover.

In the first, Renet is holding a little Turtle and has a non-Cerebus Aardvark wrapped around her. I wasn't referencing TMNT8, so her helmet has a third circle on top, with an arrow sticking straight up:

The next page in the sketchbook has Renet kissing  what appears to be Cerebus.  Odd, given there are no romantic overtones between the two in the comic.  Was I doing a Frog Prince riff? No idea:

The next sketch is digital. A very rough Cerebus is sniffing Renet suspiciously:

Next is another digital sketch. The Renet figure from the SNIFF sketch is flipped and there is a new Cerebus drawing. He now has his sword. This is the first time the Turtles appear, in the four corners. And Cerebus and Renet are surrounded by circles. There was going to be a lot of organic foliage around the cover, because it's fun to draw.  The logo, swiped from Dave's cover as a place holder, is divided up between the top and bottom.

The next image is a revision of the previous sketch. The text is now at the bottom of the cover, and Cerebus and Renet are smaller on the cover:

I decided to try a pose for Renet with more movement, and replaced Cerebus' sword with the Time Scepter from the issue. The foliage has been replaced with energy from the Time Scepter:

This is the image I sent to Waverly that was approved.

From here, I proceed to start the pencils. However, when laying it out, I realized that I didn't really know what I was doing with the rings around the figures.  I had envisioned them as being filled with different decorative drawings, but there were WAY too many rings to fill them all with items from the issue.  Instead, I made them interlocking rings.  I started with alternating small and large rings.  Cerebus was still holding the Time Scepter in front of him. I wanted more movement, but I couldn't work out how to have him swinging it without either A) The scepter extending outside the circle or B) obscuring a lot of his face.

Having made a mess of this piece of Bristol board, with too many circles and lines and erasure marks, I retreated to a sketch book, to work out Cerebus' pose and how to draw the rings.  For the rings, I settled on having them the same size.  I tried texturing them, but it looked too busy.  I knew I wanted the color to do a lot of the heavy lifting on the tone and texture. In the bottom right, you can see the basic pose for Cerebus that I landed on:

Having resolved these issues, I started the pencils again, on a new piece of Bristol Board. I laid in Cerebus, Renet, the circles, and the basic outline of everything else.  Although at this point, I hadn't settled what would fill all the spaces around the Turtles. I was still imagining that there would be organic foliage:

Just the Fax, Ma'am: More SDOAR 2023 Rewards

I mentioned to Dave that his Pappa Balloon & Cactus variant cover was generating a bit of chatter and he faxed me the following note:

This is the little bit of Eddie Campbell by James Windsor-Smith as mentioned by Dave Sim!
And this the microscopic "Uncle Jerk" piece by Roman Rathert on Jack Kirby...

In case you didn't read Dave's fax, here are a few pull quotes for James Windsor-Smith and Roman Rathert. Sadly, James, you might need to run a spell check on your title.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"Poppa Balloon & Cactus is [a] brilliant and hilarious dark comedy." - Dave Sim

"Roman Rathert's ... "Uncle Jerk" piece on Jack Kirby ... it's, hands-down, one of the best Kirby articles I've ever read." - Dave Sim

That's a long way to say -- if YOU are publishing an indie comic and would like a variant cover at some point in the future, consider donating $200 to the GoFundMe campaign -- and I'll put a good word in for you!

Spoilers! Please Hold Addendum

If you had the pleasure of listening to this month's Please Hold for Dave Sim, you will know that we had a spot of fun with the final three letters at the end of call. Below is what I used as reference for those final three letters.

Matt's unreliable narration aside, if you are not listening to Please Hold every month, you are in for a treat. Matt does an amazing job engaging Dave for several hours a month, and I like nothing more than when Matt says something that cracks Dave up.

I raise my glass to you, good sir! Job spectacularly well done!

I think that's all I got!

"Do you know the way to Elrod Way? Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa"

Hi, Everybody!

______________________________

SAY! have you heard about the NEW Cerebus Crowdfunding Campaign?

"Yes, Matt. We know ALL about the Remastered TMNT #8. Ya kinda won't shut up about it..."

No, not THAT Cerebus Crowdfunding Campaign, the BRAZILIAN one:
"Did somebody say Brazil?"

Apparently Oliver's Cerebus movie being on the streaming down there has paid off...

They're doing, at Dave's suggestion, Swords of Cerebus Vol. 1 in Portuguese.

It's got that Sean Robinson remastered goodness. In Portuguese.

Anyway, since you mentioned it, have you heard about the new Kickstarter?

"YES!!! We LITERALLY just said it's all your talking about!!! PAY! A! TTENTION!!!!!"

No, not THAT Kickstarter, Gary Boyarski's Kickstarter for Jack Grim #11
.
Hi Matt!

I know I've been pretty absent in regards to the active Cerebus fandom/crew as of late, but I was wondering if you're interested in giving my current Kickstarter a plug on the ol MOC page. Lots of Cerebus fans were exposed to my comic, Jack Grimm thanks to Dave's cover art on my last issue (Jack Grimm's Halloween Treat #1)
and I thought that this would be the best way to reach out to them.

Jack Grimm issue 11 is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter here,

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1961845066/jack-grimm-harbinger-of-death-11?ref=project_link

There is also the option to catch up and get the full set with issue 1-11 for those who are new to the series.

I've included some images that you can share from issue 11. Including the ultimate Cerebus reference that I could come up with.

Thanks!
Gary Boyarski
creator Jack Grimm: Harbinger of Death

Get it?

Any anyway, SPEAKING OF THE REMASTERED TURTLES 8 Kickstarter,
Thanks Iguana!

Our man at the Waverly Press sent me:

Please Hold For Dave Sim 3/2023

Hi, Everybody!

Audio:

Video:

Once again, Aardvark-Vanaheim President Dave Sim and A Moment of Cerebus Interim Editor Manly Matt Dow take three-ish hours out of their busy days to answer reader questions, drop some news, and generally "shoot the $#!*" in a lil' sumthin'-sumthin' we call Please Hold For Dave Sim.

In this, the THIRD installment for 2023, Dave and Manly discuss:
Part 1:
Matt remembers Cerebus fan, and Dave Sim Superfan, Jeff Seiler. Specifically that time Jeff nearly cancelled Judenhass and glamourpuss. Good times.
Dave answers the first (in what will be a series of questions) from Adam J. Elkhadem, creator of Octave the Artist
Then we head to the Big Board to see how the Remastered Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 Kickstarter is doing. As of this writing, it's at $44,718 with 303 backers.
What music Matt used for the TMNT #8 countdown video he made.
Then a deep dive into the can of worms Darrell Cook opened in the Cerebus Faceybookee group, wherein he talks about Jaka's molestation as a child, and his suspicions that Lord Julius was the culprit. This goes on for a while...
Part 3:
Michael R., of the Easton, Pennsylvania Rs, asks about the "apposite biblical reference" of Jaka and the red wine at the end of Rick's Story.
Michael Grabowski asks about the Cirinists adulation of Jaka in Going Home.
And then three questions about the Remastered Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 Kickstarter all came in AT THE SAME TIME. What. A. Coincidence.

Next Time: Updates to stuff

Gov't Subsidies (Dave's weekly update #477)

Hi, Everybody!

Dave's Weekly Update:

OKAY, I know that we're supposed to be "ALL TURTLES 8, ALL THE TIME" until the Kickstarter ends, but I'm guessing this week's update probably was in the kitty before the TMNT #8 batch hit.

ANYWAY how's the Kickstarter doing Iguana?
Like this image? You're gonna be seeing a lot of it...A LOT

Awesome! YOU (if you haven't yet) should back the Remastered Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 Kickstarter from Aardvark-Vanaheim and The Waverly Press.

They got covers, oh man do they got covers:
Cerebus creator Dave Sim has illustrated 3 new covers including his own updated homage (with colorist David Birdsong) to Kevin Eastman's original 1986 wraparound cover! In addition, some of the brightest names in contemporary comics have created new T8 variant covers for this release. We are thrilled to offer new covers by Jim Lawson, Steve Lavigne and Michael Dooney, all veteran Turtles artists during the magical early days at MIRAGE. In fact, Michael Dooney worked on the original T8 book back in 1986! Some of you may recognize the cover work by Fero Pe, a contemporary Turtles artist for IDW, and Ciro Nieli who was the executive producer of the 2012 Turtles series for Nickelodeon. Nieli's dynamic, artistic style set the tone for the modern age of Turtles. We also have incredible covers by Heavy Metal Magazine artist Federico Mele, the instantly recognizable Kyle Hotz who has created work for IDW, Marvel, DC and Dark Horse, and comics legend Simon Bisley who has created work for just about every comics publisher over the last 40 years! Brandon Graham, Eisner Award nominee and modern indie comics favorite has brought his unique style to this release. Sam Heimer has created a super cool Halloween themed cover, perfect for the year 'round trick or treaters out there! Carson Grubaugh, another Eisner Award nominee for his work on The Strange Death of Alex Raymond, Cerebus in Hell artist Benjamin Hobbs, Living the Line's Sean Michael Robinson, and the brilliant newcomer Brookes Morris round out this stellar line up of variant cover artists for this very special release!
Click over to see them in all there glory.

They got add-ons and whatnots:
The Platinum Foil cover features new art by Dave Sim, the wraparound Pop cover features vintage art from T8 by Eastman, Laird and Sim, and the Blank Logo cover is ready for you or your favorite artist to create a unique, one of a kind cover! All 3 books come with a trading card unique to each variant.

We are offering both Cerebus #1 and Turtles #1 homage covers by Brookes Morris in alternate editions. Both are recolored and 'distressed' by Benjamin Hobbs and they are super cool! In this variant 2-pack you will also receive the milestone Cerebus #100 trading card, hand signed by Dave Sim!

Oscar's Letter to Smithers & Co

Back in July of 2021 in A Page Layout Meant For Cerebus #124 is when we last saw a page from Dave Sim’s 16th Cerebus notebook. The notebook covers Cerebus #122 through 127 and had 67 pages scanned.

Somehow page 63 of the notebook caught my attention even though it is a wall of text:

Notebook #16, page 63

The top of the page has a quote that doesn’t seem to be part of the rest of the text: ‘He’s enduring, but as yet he has no urge to know’.

The majority of text on the page is Oscar’s letter to Smithers & Co that is seen on page 273 of Jaka’s Story, aka page 1 of Cerebus #127.

Oscar’s letter to Smithers & Co.

The letter in the notebook is quite a bit different than the one in the finished book. Oscar asking for the money due to him. Though in the notebook version he returns a  check due to it being not enough, and withholding the ‘Locked Door chapter’ of Jaka’s Story, “Not daughter of Palnu  as (they) keep mistakenly referring to it”.

We also get to see that at the time of Jaka’s Story, a Crown is worth 60 copper bits and that Oscar gets half of a copper bit for each printing of his work. And instead of Oscar talking about how he regard what they did to his book entitled Poems being the cause of it not doing as financially well as it should and Oscar laying out all of the math that got him to the amount he thinks his owed to him of 1,876 crowns.
