Hi Matt!

Attached! Ultimate DeadHand THE RAVEN illustration for the new UFO (United Fanzine Organization) Chairman, Steve Keeter (succeeding STRAW MAN's David Branstetter just as he -- Steve -- succeeded Carl Gafford back in 1973).

Talked myself into it as an "end of working day" excuse (insert chorus of "My Right Wrist Can Rest…Tomorrow" from ANNIE: I literally sleep on it) to channel my inner Bill Sienkiewicz because there are virtually no costume details. Just black and white shapes and muscles. "You aren't getting paid for it -- it's a freebie. So genuinely don't care what it looks like: ULTIMATE DeadHand". It only took an hour (including the handful of Neal Adams/Bill S. pen-lines).

So then I got sort of ambitious and photocopied Ben Robinson III's THE RAVEN logo from the back cover of #2, enlarging it 200% and adding Ultimate DeadHand dry-brush wings. Then photocopied the cityscape background from the glamourpuss splash page "When Avant Garde Went Retro". Slapped in chunks of that, retouched with pen lines and DeadHand whiteout. Two hours total. Cover? Back cover? Pin-up? It's proportional to 5.5." x 8.5" -- that's the important part.

THE RAVEN is one of the earliest black super-heroes (and THE earliest Small Press black super-hero if I'm not mistaken -- one of the story hooks is that no one knows he's black because his costume covers his whole body) appearing in OM #2 (1973), SPECTRUM #3 (1974), SATYR #2 (1975), OM #6 (1999), THE RAVEN #1 (2003) which Steve has just reprinted $2.50 postpaid stevekeeter@gmail.com and, yes, he does accept paypal COSMIC MAN #2 (2009) and MAIN ENTERPRISES #3 and 4 (ca. 2011), THE RAVEN #2 (2021) $2.50 postpaid stevekeeter@gmail.com and, yes, he does accept paypal

Thus proving that the time is ALWAYS right for any Small Presser to revisit a character he created. Even 48 years later.

Fun With Black Holes

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

We last saw pages from Dave Sim’s 22nd notebook, which covers Cerebus #186 through 201, back in February of 2019 in Leftovaries Feast Fer Evryone Eltz. The notebook started with 80 pages of which 71 pages were scanned, the rest were missing or blank. 

I noticed that other than the cover, the first page from the notebook was #37. So I took a look at the first 36 pages. All but one was just a wall of text. Page #36 had a sketch and then some text. Ahh, the tiny type of Reads. Going through those 36 pages, I noticed that swiggle that shows up in Reads, that separates bits of the story. The decorative flourish:

The text doesn’t quite match up with what is on the finished page. There are some other bits added. A few removed, but it is interesting to compare them:

I wonder if he wrote all 36 pages at once, or went back over time to complete it? Looking at the notebook pages, it appears he went back after he wrote it and did some mark ups, though of them do appears to be done as he was writing. And yet, with the mark-ups, there are still differences from the finished text. 

SWORDS OF CIH?: The Goldilocks Spot

Dave and I have tried several different sizes for the width of SWORDS OF CIH?. The first proof was the width of a standard CIH? issue (About six and a half inches).  In order to not lose any part of the page to the glue holding the book together, it was decided that the page needed to be expanded. The second set of proofs had wider widths: 7 inches and 7.25 inches. These sizes were arrived at by virtue of being smaller than a Golden Age bag, which is 7.5 inches wide. (The book needs to fit into a standard Comic Bag. Comfortably.) This was Dave's reply when he saw the proofs:

The next two proofs are off to Dave. Hopefully we'll have a final decision soon, as time is running out!
