MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.
With 138 pages scanned, it isn't surprising we've looked at Dave Sim's notebook #21 a couple times already, most recently in December 2015 with "Talking With Dave". It covers issues #197 to 211 of Cerebus.
During that time frame Dave wrote the essay "exit Sandman: MY CHAT WITH NEIL" which was published in Cerebus #209.
Dave wrote some notes for the essay on pages 93 through 96 of the notebook:
Notebook #21, page 93 |
Notebook #21, page 94 |
Notebook #21, page 95 |
Notebook #21, page 96 |

Two guys who were (are) VERY much in their heads.
And, I mean that in a good way.
Gerhard approaches that, but he's a little more of a "Guy".
Hi, Ger!
It's amazing how much of the piece I can recall just based off of Dave's notes here!
If I live long enough, I should probably get around to doing SANDMAN Commentaries someday.
