Minotaur/Watchmen one is very funny because IT'S SO TRUE!

Another nice bunch, guys. Looking forward to the zero issue (which isn't currently on the Previews list for next week, but who knows?).

Thanks guys! We're going to have to consider the online strips "rough drafts" for the moment, working on adding in a proofreading stage for the month's strips before they're sent to George and Tim. With that in mind, I've completely emptied the file of available FINISHED strips and slotted them into November 1st to December 4th. Which means, we now have six weeks to develop protocols with the strips that need to be photoshopped. "The Paint Department" -- Benjamin H and Cory F at the moment -- are doing a great job but a few of their panels need a little bit of "tweaking" as they learn the CIH? ABCs.

November will also include the two longest continuities -- strips more than a week long -- to see what the reaction -- if any/positive or negative -- is to that. I suspect with a daily strip as long as we get back to one-shot gags before the end of the second week it won't really be that noticeable. But -- we'll see.

I FedExed the certified cheque for the #0 printing on Friday and Karine (Hi Karine!) said if they had the files by this weekend the ship date is October 14. That's the ship date to Diamond, so build in working its way through their system. That depends on the volume of books the major publishers are moving through Diamond between October 17 and Halloween. Large volume and we could get bumped a couple of times. Low or normal volume and it could in stores by the 31st.

Hi Dave,

What are some general examples of issues that need tweaking, aside from typos? I am, of course, more than happy to do second drafts if they're called for. Just asking out of curiosity, as I doubt you have time to give specific panel examples.

Hi Cory - pt. size is a problem. I use 9 pt (smallest my laptop goes) and Sandeep uses 8 pt. I'm trying not to vary the sizes of fonts but that's at war with the fact that I want the type to invoke a specific emphasis in your "mental ear". One way to fix that, I think, is to build the Photoshopped strip ON TOP of my mocked-up version: that is, so you can see through it and match what I've done as closely as possible
through enlargement and reduction.

I think that would solve the other two common problems: balloon tails that are too wide and intrusive and balloon placement. If you don't get the balloons right where they need to be, you read them in the wrong order and that really kills the joke. I'll often retype a balloon because it doesn't fit where it needs to be and/or spend ten minutes moving it microscopic fractions of an inch. That's particularly true where there's an "exchange" in the panel: character #1 says A followed by character #2 saying B character #1 saying C and character #2 saying D. The eye has to naturally travel from the one to the other. A has to be NOTICEABLY closer to B than C or you're going to read C after A.

I suggest building the strip on top of mine because I've already worked all of that out: HOW to ensure that it reads A B C D instead of A C B D. And, as I say, it usually comes down to overlap, insertion, retyping or all three and involves microscopic inch fractions.

We'll have plenty of time: the next batch you'll be getting is for December release so we should be able to "bounce" them back and forth a couple of times if need be.

And EVERYONE does "too large" thought balloon circle tails. They have to be really small or they interfere with the gag by calling attention to themselves.

Dave,

The font issue might be resolved if you would save the word/text document that you create when you write the comic and give that file to Sandeep to send out to who ever is doing that particular strip. The words could then be copied and pasted, and should retain their correct font size. Additionally it would make the work of compiling the strips much quicker. (Reducing my work time by as much as 20%)

Just a thought,
Benjamin Hobbs

Hi Dave — Roger that, I'll use that method going forward. Strangely, though, I am using either 8 or 9 pt. sizes! Must be as you mentioned before, that computers react differently. Definitely looking forward to more lead time on the next round!
