MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.
A couple of weeks ago we saw page 83 of Dave Sim’s thirteenth notebook which covered a bit of Cerebus #114. In fact, it was page 11 and some artwork of young Jaka that is on page 16 & 17 of Cerebus #114.
So what is on page 84? Well, if you guessed layout for pages 12 and 13 of Cerebus #114, you’d be correct.
Notebook #13, page 84 |
The six panel grid and dialogue are pretty close to the final pages. Though all of the sound effects on page 13 aren’t there:
Cerebus #114, pages 12 & 13 |
There is actually other items on the notebook pages as well as the two page layouts. In the upper right corner is a list that goes from 14 though 21, with 21 crossed out. Cerebus #114 – 119 is actually the section of Jaka’s Story called Pogrom's Progress. Down in the bottom left corner is a sketch of the character who will became Oscar.
