And speaking of the innocent suffering, "comics metaphysics", and a moment of Cerebus, here's Jeet Heer's Twitter-essay suggesting someone do an essay on on "How Cerebus the Aardvark explains Trump": https://storify.com/beschizza/how-cerebus-the-aardvark-explains-trump (with occasional comments, in the original thread, by critic R. Fiore).

Church & State was really a milestone not only for Cerebus but for comics too!

I thought and still think that the double issue that bridged the gap between Church & State and Jaka's Story was the seminal release in the Cerebus history.

112/113 stands alone as brilliance nonpareil.

IMHO.

Having said that, I will add that Gerhard can draw the Moon (and planets and at least one other moon) like nobody else.

Thanks to Sandeep for the link! The Mooninites are one of the best parts of Aqua Teen.

"Everyone please, bow your heads and pretend to be serious."

"Do it or I'll bow 'em for ya!"

Bah. He lost me with #4. No point reading further.

What part of point #4 seems inaccurate to you, Tony? I'd quibble first with #7; I don't recall Cerebus losing followers by his actions as pope.

"Creating a new hyper-sexist religion." Yes, Dave has created his own, new religion - nothing new there, Luther did that - but "hyper-sexist?" Perhaps I'm revealing my prejudices here, but while Dave has engaged in some over-the-top rhetoric, I think his main point is simply realistic, not "hyper-sexist." Men and women are not the same thing - I don't think anyone disputes that - and yet that's exactly what "equal" means!

Tony, I assume it's referring to the religion Cerebus creates in Latter Days, with the angel/demon stuff (where the Julie Doucet character is sentenced to death...because she's ugly, I guess?). It's not referring to Dave's own beliefs (although undoubtedly most people feel the two are intertwined).

Ah, silly me…I find that part of "Latter Day(e)s" rather unmemorable, and so I had forgotten about it. I very much like the "Complete Dick Rule," though.

@Jeff - 112/113 was my jumping on point for Cerebus. Didn't have a clue what was going on, but it screamed BRILLIANCE to me.

Then I started reading the series from front to back and back to front (the bi-weeklies were a godsend!)...

...and I'm still here - with CAN, TCOP and whatever else comes next!
