I just left a phone message with Robin and Dave about the message below. I told them the main parts and told them if they wanted they could see here for the rest.

Dear Bob Synder, Dave Sim, and such,

I just learned about Out of this World # 7 with Steve Ditko art because Dave Sim of Cerebus just did a Dave Sim Weekly Update on his YouTube channel about it because he got an issue of it that's the reprint. He loved how Steve did that cover with the man having those different body parts. I was curious about the news print that Steve used shaped and glued into the art as parts of his body, and so I did a search for that cover and found the original black and white art from it at http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vl91-9rW0d0/T_bmAfO-OEI/AAAAAAAAFVw/lxl2IS5N-sI/s1600/ootw7.jpg .

It was a good scan and I zoomed in on the news print and I was able to learn after doing a search of the key words in the main part of it (It looks like there was two different segments of other article fragments used overall.), that it was from an article about the then (1957 ish) famous and still well known labor rights columnist Victor Riesel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Riesel , who that article was about how the famous gangster named Dio threw acid on his eyes for retaliation for Rissel accusing him of rackateering. It kind of reminded me of Daredevil in how he became blind and the gangster elements.

Rissel at the time had even teamed up with a famous attorney to do a column. I know who created Daredevil, but you also know about how Marvel first approached Steve to do Daredevil. Steve said, "Lev Gleason's publications' copyrights, had become public property. Goodman or his lawyers, became aware of this. Marvel acquired [or usurped] Daredevil who had been drawn by Charles Biro. Stan wanted me to do [launch] the Marvel Daredevil. I could actually use Biro's Daredevil costume [if i wanted, or create something new. But,] I didn't want to do it [Marvel’s Daredevil book]." I think it's interesting either way and that was some of that time period's real life events that such creators drew from to do stories.

And, I wouldn't have put much thought into the news print even though I know Steve was known for his objective views, but when I saw the word "Bonn" (I had to turn my computer upside down to read the newsprint because Steve put it upside down.) at the beginning of the newsprint that he used in the one foot part of the drawing of the man on the cover, I wondered if he at all had put more thought into the whole piece of art than I'd thought? "How cool I thought if Bonn meant foot or something?" So I looked it up and it does mean the sole of the foot https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bonn !

Then, I wondered if maybe the three news print words that I thought kind of appeared blacked out, but which I'd decided may have been just blurriness or Steve maybe having blacked them out only to avoid copyrights, maybe were also Steve making some kind of objective point of his own. So, I looked at it again and if so I couldn't tell.

The print reads (The main part of it seen), "Dio who is under indicment [The '-cment' part of the word looks kind of blacked out.] as the mastermind of the [Kind of blacked out word I couldn't read.] plot against Riesel stayed with [I think the latter word was "with", but it too was kind of blacked out looking.] the 5th admendment on that point too. He had nothing but a deadly refusal to answer when M[The name cuts off] asked, "Isn't if actually true that a card-carrying member...party..."

Again, either way I think someone like you and Dave would appreciate whatever little additional commentary on a creator like Steve.

If you want to talk about it let me know at 812-479-6434. I don't have email or check social media, but I did want to share this with you and others. Thanks Steve and Dave and A Moment of Cerebus and Dave's Weekly Update for sharing the cover and art by Steve.

Tony, not so sure about OUT OF THIS WORLD still being available, but can point you in the direction of the latest SD Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1704592942/snyder-and-ditko-33rd-kickstarter-campaign.

Tony again said...

I pledged right after my post; the level I chose said I'd get a "complete Out Of This World." But thanks!

For those interested: The "Kickstarter" Brian links to closes Oct. 22.

Steve Ditko" "He was weird before most of us were born." What a great tagline.

Cool, Tony. I am eyeing the Ditko Package reward myself.
