I would say I do, but Dave sends me the Monday Report before 7am every Monday. I find it to be a great way to start the work week. As for that Cerebus page, I loved it, I still do and its a guess, but I think it is 100% autobiographical. I had a similar reaction when reading the Old Testament for the first time and stumbled onto Balaam and his talking ass. Why wasn't this in Sunday School? A talking Donkey!?! Kids love that stuff, but nooooooo, the dang Baptists don't want to tell you about the talking donkey.

Dave's response to Scripture is somewhat intense. I find myself a little wary and a little jealous of such tremendous devotion. My faith took a BIG hit and has suffered for it. Dave's faith seems rock solid to me. Anyone that is a big enough asshole (not you, Matt, you know who I mean) to challenge him on it might as well be attempting to get Alan Moore and Bill Sienkeviiiiiiiithccccchhhhh to finish Big Numbers.

It's a Comic Book Blog. What analogy did you think I would make?

Late comer to Cerebus, as well as a late comer to Jesus (though I was “saved” in 1987, when I accepted Christ into my life and was baptized, I don’t think I really believed until 2018) but I do enjoy reading the Monday Report. I don’t agree with most of Dave’s inferences of The Gospel According to John, but still respect his willingness to share what he thinks are insights here.

As a Baptist, I think it a natural response to engaging with Scripture, akin to Bible Study.

As Protestant, I consider Dave’s attempt so far, as an extension - albeit an idiosyncratic one - of the Protestant tradition of engaging with Scripture: one individual’s personal response to The Bible itself, beyond the Pulpit, beyond the congregation, and potentially beyond - depending on how one views both fellowship and worship - outside of the Church.

Thus, what I think Dave is sharing here is his own intellectual, and sensory experience with Scripture. This is why I don’t get verklimpt over his inferences. He never suggests in any of the reports that this is what you should think of Scripture, just what he thinks about it. For that reason, I don’t trip over what he writes.

I'm here to read whatever is going on in Dave's world. Even if that is an intense letter about a steady diet of graham crackers to reduce the urges.

Still hoping we'll get a tip on how to get a hold of a physical (as in Hardcover with dustjackets) copy of the Russian translation. They owe me. Going up in a house that was a primary target for a nuke. I guess the Chinese have all that covered now.

That's all I've got to say for the moment. Okay, one more word...cornflakes.

Matt -

I hope your eye appointment was a regular checkup and not due to any problems!

I also do. Nice comment, Birdsong! Dave mustard seed puts us all to shame.

I do wonder if his aloud readings are of the Interlinear Bible he quotes or the original languages in which the books were written. Maybe a "Please Hold" question?

On Mondays, yes.

What Dave is doing is not vastly different from what other Protestants have done since the Reformation: approach Scripture as a personal, intellectual, sensory experience, an endeavor that can be free from surveillance or oversight by clergy or fellow believers, if one chooses.

I don’t agree with much of Dave’s inferences so far, but I don’t have to in order to appreciate them. They’re HIS inferences, and someone can correct me if I am wrong here, but so far Dave his not claimed that his inferences are, to humor everybody, is Gospel Truth. Instead, Dave has suggested that reading John aloud to himself, straight through, is the best way for himself to be near the Truth.

Mileage undoubtedly varies here as to how useful that suggestion might be. And, a few here have made it plain that it’s of no use to them at all. But such disagreement points to a healthy, reasonable debate of ideas here, I think. So, personally speaking I am good with reading Dave’s thoughts here about the Gospel of John.

I do have a selfish wish that he would finish Chapter Three before the year’s out. But, then again, it’s Dave Sim’s Monday Report, not mine. He’s entitled to do what he wants with his work and infer at his leisure.

Self-righteousness, also called sanctimoniousness, sententiousness and holier-than-thou attitudes is a feeling or display of (usually smug) moral superiority derived from a sense that one's beliefs, actions, or affiliations are of greater virtue than those of the average person. Self-righteous individuals are often intolerant of the opinions and behaviours of others.

I think the religious elements are part of the AMOC experience. I'm a Christian and have my own path but I still find Dave's interpretation interesting. Has there been another take out there that explains physics with Genesis like the opening of The Last Day?

I figure most people get different things out of AMOC and that eclecticism is part of the appeal.

cheers,

I don't have much to say about Dave's sui generis approach to religion, but to claim to revere "Scripture" while, as far as I can tell, completely ignoring the Psalms.....OY.
