MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.
Last week in Cerebus #74 Page Thumbnails we saw page 51 from Dave Sim’s eighth Cerebus notebook, which covers Cerebus #70 through 79. Page 51 showed us some small sketches of pages 18 though 20 of Cerebus #74. Skipping ahead to page 54, we see thumbnails for pages #13 through 17 of Cerebus #75, aka Church & State I pages 485 through 489 :
Notebook #8, page 54 |
It also has the dialogue for the pages. They both match up closely to the finished pages.
Cerebus #75, pages 13 & 14 |
Cerebus #75, pages 15 through 17 |
The dialogue for page 14 that shows in the top right corner says: “Are you hungry? Cerebus could have the kitchen something sent up.” That was the line used on the finished page.
There were no thumbnails for pages 1 through 12 of Cerebus #75. Just skipped to page 13.
