Coloring Matisse

Benjamin Hobbs:

Dave Sim drew Cerebus as MATISSE THE UNKNOWN TURTLE, which was incorporated into this print:

I cut The Matisse figure out of that print, and detoned it:

 Then added color flats:

Nuanced color was added:

This is tentatively to be part of the cover for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Cerebi sequel that MIGHT be part of the 2022 line-up.

Next Week: CIH? 2021 schedule.

Nice coloring BH! Reminds me of the airbrushed First publishing TMNT color editions, nice muted greens.

For some reason I prefer the garish lime green Matisse. Not sure why.

I really hope there is more Cerebus plus TMNT at some point. I got the opportunity to speak to Dave about TMNT and Cerebus once in person the one time he was in Savannah, Georgia. It was well-after the portfolio reviews occurred (I got to be reviewed by Charles Vess. What a treat!) but the person I really wanted to see was Sim. So I talked to everyone I could find with the help of my Mom (I was a teen at the time), and our detective work paid off. Dave allowed us to meet with him while he had lunch. He offered me a chance to eat with him, but I just opted for a nice 15 minute discussion and tried to run away as fast as I could. He was very nice and generous. ANYWAY– I told him that I always thought the mouths on TMNT characters always resembled the treatment on Cerebus's mouth and wanted to know if he thought he might have inspired that aspect of the turtles. He said something like "I never noticed that. I don't remember what they look like exactly." So I drew it on a napkin and he said "OH! I guess you could be right. That's interesting." There was more personal aspects to the conversation and my aspirations as well... but that's my TMNT Cerebus memory! [I didn't check this comment for grammar or spelling btw.]
