Brad Bak Bufin Id Not Here

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Yes, I made it back from the Oregon Trail just fine – though our “Wagon” did have a wheel problem, we fixed it and carried on. But coming back, and looking at notebook #7, I want to carry on with it, as we can see Dave’s progression though Cerebus #69 and the occasional glimpse of Cerebus #70. Dave’s seventh notebook covers Cerebus #59 through #69, and for the past month we’ve been looking at pages near the end of the notebook.

So the next page in the notebook is #148:

Notebook #7, page 148

And the page starts off where page #147 of the notebook ends. The top left panel of the thumbnail for page #19 of Cerebus #69 is fairly accurate – Cerebus getting smacked around by Red Sophia’s mother, Mrs. Henrot-Gutch. Below that it says “Brad Bak Bufin id here” which sounds like Cerebus with a cold. But Bran doesn’t show up again until Cerebus #71. The little stick figures leaping to their deaths are the messengers that jump off the hotel earlier in Cerebus #69. And of course, Mrs Henrot-Gutch makes an appearance.

The next page of the notebook shows some pages that as far as I can tell – weren’t used in the comic. It appears to be two people talking about Weisshaupt while he lies in bed. Their conversation is on the far right, and as best as I can tell say:

He has an extraordinary will to live.

But at this point, there’s not way of telling the extent of the damage to his heart.

Follow the instructions I’ve given you. . .above all keep him warm. Winter isn’t far off now.

Be sure the fire is kept going and in his room.

And keep the doors closed against the draught.

We also see a sketch of the floor plan to Weisshaupt’s room in the lower right corner.

Notebook #7, page 149

Hey boss man, remind me to ask you to ask Dave about this page – why didn’t he use this?

Dave answers the question in Please Hold for Dave Sim 10/2022 part five.
