MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Dave Sim’s second Cerebus notebook covers Cerebus #27 through 37 with 198 pages out of 200 pages scanned in. The missing two pages were either ripped out or had absolutely nothing on  them. At this point when I was scanning in the notebooks, I didn’t make a note of which one it was.  We last saw pages from this notebook last May in Lord Julius’ Entrance.

Last week we looked at some rough page lay-outs from notebook #9. So how about some really small rough layouts from notebook #2?

Notebook #2, page 44

In the upper left corner of the page we see three rectangular blocks with page layouts for Cerebus  #29 pages 1, 3, and 4. There is some dialogue for those pages as well. The Cerebus face on the bottom of the page 4 rough layout is pretty much the same as the one on the finished page. In fact, the layouts are pretty close to the finished pages.

In the digital copy of High Society, Dave mentions the sketches of the guy with the big nose are the first sketches of the Prime Minister of Iest. The circled numbers, 17 – 20, indicate page numbers. Dave has written down under #17 “Reply to Cerebus’ letter to the prime minister’. And yes, on page 17 of Cerebus #29 someone reads the Prime Minister’s reply to Cerebus letter.
