A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.
We just looked at Dave’s ninth Cerebus notebook, which covers Cerebus #80 through 86, last week, and I want to look at another page from it. I noticed a page with some page layout sketches that we haven’t seen yet. Well. . .kind of. We saw pages 26 and 28, the pages to either side of this page, back in February of 2018’s Give Me Strength.
Those two pages go over first the dialogue for the pages and then pages 8 and 9 of Cerebus #83, aka Church & State II page 642 and 643. So the in-between page covers pages 5 through 7 of Cerebus #83.

There is only one line of dialogue on this notebook page “I was staying [illegible]”, but that is changed on the final page to “I was with him up until a few days ago. . .”
