Cerebus #121 Notebook Images

MARGARET LISS:

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Dave Sim’s fifteenth notebook covers Cerebus #118 through 122 and had 98 pages scanned. We last saw a couple pages from it in The Locked Door Opened from September of 2019.

On page 59 of the notebook there are two sketches that each take up half of the page.

Notebook #15, page 59

The sketch on the top of the page shows Oscar and Rick on the couch with some dialogue:

It smells like Jaka’s cinnamon buns.

It considered itself flattered.

There is also an issue box number for issue #122 in the upper left corner. However, the only page that looks similar to this page is in Cerebus #121. Page four:

Cerebus #121, page 4, aka Jaka’s Story page 156

The bottom section of the notebook page shows a sketch that would become the cover to Cerebus #121 – a few of Oscar’s fireplaces from his couch:

Swords of CIH? Volume 9... Decisions, decisions!

Benjamin Hobbs:

Volume 9 of Swords of Cerebus In Hell? is the first volume that's been REALLY difficult to decide who to put on the cover.  The Options were Silver Cerebus, Vark Thing, or the Varking Dead.

I ruled out Silver Cerebus because the other two options are more dynamic.

The Varking Dead fits really well on both the Hardcover  and the dust jacket:

However, since the covers are printed on a digital printer, I'd have to remove the tone from the Varking Dead figure and that would be... time consuming.

I started to de-tone the image. There's more tiny little lines on this drawing than any other Cerebus image I've de-toned.  I was using a 3 pixel brush to get into those hard to reach areas.  As a point of reference, I generally use a 15 pixel brush.

Vark Thing looks good on the cover, but the image cuts off at the shoulders and sort of just ends abruptly at the spine of the book.  (He could be a little wider the dust jacket.)

Let me know which you'd prefer in the comments: Vark Thing or Varking Dead!

Next Week: More Dust Jacket fun!

"OH YES...CEREBUS HAS ANGUISHED OVER IT FOR WEEKS..."

Hi, Everybody!

In honor of Hobbs and Mrs. Hobbs marriage last Saturday, (if you wanna get the loely coupe something, how's about filling out you survey for the latest Kickstarter?,) I was gonna post Cerebus' three weddings. But the first one was never shown, the second one is REALLY creepy in the context of The Hobbs's marriage, and the third one I've already posted this year...

Buuuutttt since I already have the first marriage sized and Blog ready...

The Strange Death of Alex Raymond Kickstarter on the other hand...
Sean posted:
In Search of an ETA
Hello backers!

This is just a quick update to the situation with the misprinted books.

As mentioned in previous updates, the entire run was misprinted by the printer-- four pages towards the end of the book missing an entire color plate, leaving these pages with just a bit of black printing.

As mentioned before, these pages were IN the proof correctly. The error was a rather improbable one made by the printer's prepress staff, and than missed by the press person.

We have yet to receive an ETA for the corrected books, but the printer IS making progress. By my suggestion, they're looking into some options (letterpress, flexistamp) for manually adding the blue plates back into copies where this is missing. If they find an acceptable solution, they would only need to reprint a portion of the run.

Lastly, please be aware there are misprints in circulation at some Diamond stores, because of the failure of the printer to stop shipment (see previous updates). Diamond has requested that retailers destroy these copies, for which they will receive reimbursement. Please, if you see copies "in the wild", let us know the name of the store, and I will contact them, or let them know yourself, kindly please. I made a dozen of these calls on Friday, and had almost uniformly pleasant conversations with very understanding folks who had just missed the recall message from Diamond.

We REALLY want you guys to get your books, but every effort is being made to make sure that when the books DO show up, they are as good as they can possibly be.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding during this trying experience!

All the best,
Sean
p.s. Carson and I had a discussion this week about the moral imperatives of publishers, in which I wave around one of the misprint copies of the book. Check it out here, at about 26 minutes into the feed.
