Black Friday Surprise

Good evening, AMOC regulars and guests!

Today should be my last day manning the helm at AMOC. God willing at or around this time tomorrow Manly Matt Dow will have returned from his vacation and be up for posting whatever he wants here.

Saturday, I guessed that Cape Canaveral was in the distance in one of the vacation pics Matt shared with us.

Today Matt sent notice that that was indeed the famous space station in the distance.

"Yup.  The neighbor has "notes" on Silver Cerebus  . . ." --Matt

Have a safe trip back, Matt, Paula, and the two Mouseketeers.

Today is Monday, the beginning of the work week for many of us, as well as the day when Dave Sim creates another MONDAY REPORT. Here he continues his exegesis of the Gospel According to John, as found in the Kingdom Interlinear

As a way of saying "Thank you" to everyone who has read my posts over the last week I want to share a bit of good fortune that I received near the end of last month.

Most of the regulars here might remember that earlier this year there was the FORM & VOID Kickstarter created by Dagon, in cooperation with Aardvark-Vanaheim, to fund the publication of a remastered edition of volume 14 of CEREBUS. One of the rewards offered to backers was a deluxe hardcover with "all of the fixins," as Jed Clampett might say.

Since I already had a copy of FORM & VOID (a fourth printing of the phone book that I was able to snag from G-Mart Comics back in 2020) and didn't have 195 disposable clams to spend on the deluxe hardcover, I opted instead to just pledge 10 bucks. All I wanted was to show a sign of support for the project. That was in March of this year.

March 2022, my invoice for the FORM & VOID Kickstarter.

Fast forward to Black Friday 2022. I was coming home from work that evening and found a pretty sizeable package on the steps of the porch to my side door. Picked it up and saw where it was from.

I had a hunch that there was a surprise inside but had no idea what was really in store for me.

Thank you, Dave Sim and Dagon James. This is a wonderful early Christmas present.

And, thanks to all of you who have read my guest posts over the past week. It was an honor and a privilege to post here at A Moment of Cerebus.

Now, here are some news and updates.

According to Kathleen David's latest update, her husband Peter David has had surgery today

Cerebus In Hell? Checklist

Benjamin Hobbs:

Each month the back cover of CIH? features every CIH? one-shot in chronological order:

However, the back cover doesn't include the initial CIH? mini-series or any variant covers.

Luckily, one of the Legions of Loyal CIH? Readers put together a complete checklist of every CIH? book, including variants and month of release (as indicated by the Front Cover).  (This list does not include the two misprint books.) This list has been added to the Cerebus entry on Wikipedia.

Note: The numbering used on the list is based on the numbering on the spine that lists CIH? 2022 #1 as CEREBUS IN HELL? PRESENTS #58.  For that issue to be #58, CIH? #0 has to be counted as the first issue.  This is why I shouldn't be in charge of the counting.

For those who don't want to click through to Wikipedia, here is the full list of books:

Next Time: Matt's still out of town.  Hopefully AMOC doesn't burn to the ground. He didn't say "NO PARTIES!"  His mistake.

Saturday, 10 December 2022

It's all fun & games until there's a Marvel Comics shoot (the wrasslin' kind).

Good Saturday to you AMOC regulars and guests! Only a few days left until (God willing) Manly Matt Dow returns from the pleasant climes of the South to reclaim what his.

Here's a pic he sent to us assistant interim editors a couple days ago.

I believe that is Cape Canaveral in the distance. Click for bigger.

Hope our fearless leader, his wife, and the two Mouseketeers enjoy the rest of their trip.

Yesterday Rolly sent me new T8 art from Dave. Here is that.

You most definitely should click for bigger here.

Be sure to check back here often to get the word on when the TMNT 8 Remastered Kickstarter by Waverly Press, in cooperation with Aardvark-Vanaheim, will go live. Should happen in late winter/early spring 2023.

It's somewhat intimidating to man the blog. So, I am thankful to receive such tremendous support from Manly, as well as the rest of the regular contributors here. Eddie Khanna was kind enough to send the following article from the Kingston Whig-Standard from August 1980.

Click for bigger.

That is an article written by none other than Gene Day. Reading the above, as well as the unsigned editorial inset on the same page, got me to asking some questions.

What was the "caper" the editor(s) referred to?

Where did the thank you to Canada from Marvel Comics come from?

What was the comic FUN & GAMES about?

So, that last question was easy to find online. From 1979 to 1980, Marvel published a monthly magazine which had all kinds of games and puzzles called FUN & GAMES MAGAZINE.  Since there were only 13 issues ever published. I was able to narrow down the issue that Gene Day and the editor(s) at the Whig-Standard were discussing to the following issue.

FUN AND GAMES MAGAZINE #12 (AUGUST 1980)

I dug a little deeper. Performed a google search and found the following layout from this issue of FUN AND GAMES MAGAZINE.

A thank you from the Marvel Comics Bullpen to the Dominion of Canada, from FUN AND GAMES MAGAZINE #12 (AUGUST 1980).

So, I had hunch that the spread above, and the article from the Whig-Standard, were related to the Iran Hostage Crisis. The timeline seemed to match what was written in the newpaper article.  However, what I did not realize was that there was a rescue attempt done on behalf of the few diplomats who were able to flee from the American Embassy in Tehran while it was being overrun by students who were sympathetic to the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Those diplomats were able to flee to the Canadian Embassy and hide there for sometime before the CIA, with cooperation and assistance of the Canadian government, were able to extricate the diplomats from Iran and send them back home to United States.

Hollywood did a big screen treatment of the CIA's involvement in what became known as "The Canada Caper." Ben Affleck was in it

So, not having seen the movie or having any familiarity with the history of the caper itself I asked Eddie about it. He relayed that he had no knowledge of it. That took me to faxing Dave today about what he knew and what account, if any, he thought told the history of the caper best.

Fax one.

Fax two.

Sent Dave the materials you have seen already here. A couple hours later I received this considered response.

Okay. That seems like enough moments to last thru what remains of the evening. Hobbs will be here tomorrow and I will man the helm for one more day after that, before (God willing) Manly returns.

Thank you for your time everybody.

The Mighty THOR 338 (Dave's weekly update #466)

Season's Greetings, AMOC regulars and guests!

We are nearing the home stretch of Assistant Interim Editors Week at A Moment of Cerebus. But before we get to that: it's Friday and that means it's time for another Weekly Update.

Dave's Weekly Update:

Personally, I think Dave got a deal from Doug Sulipa with THOR #338. It's part two of a cliffhanger in which Donald Blake loses the enchantment of turning into Thor. Also, it's the second issue of a legendary 45-issue run by artist and writer Walt Simonson. The first issue is one of the key comics of the Bronze Age: THE MIGHTY THOR #337 (NOVEMBER 1983).

My own personal copy of THE MIGHTY THOR #337 (NOVEMBER 1983).

This leads me to my first moment of Cerebus.

I didn't start collecting Simonson's run of Thor in earnest until I was in college during the late 1990s.
It was thru this that I actually was introduced to Cerebus. I had gotten all of the back issues of THOR up to issue #379. But, I couldn't find the following issue anywhere in town.

THE MIGHTY THOR #380 was hard to find in the 1990s for two reasons. First, Simonson had returned to drawing duties after a long hiatus for this issue. He still wrote every issue of Thor during his run, but once he started working on his co-creation of X-FACTOR with his wife, comics editor and writer Louise Simonson, the penciling duties for THOR were handed over to Sal Buscema, a solid artist in the Marvel Bullpen, just not quite as inventive as Simonson in my opinion.

Second, THOR #380 was a hot comic because it found a de-powered Thor achieving a Pyrrhic victory over the Midgard Serpent. The way Simonson laid out this entire issue was with splash pages, sometimes double splash pages like this one.

Click for bigger.

I still couldn't find the comic anywhere in town at the local comics shops. So, I ordered it thru Mile High Comics by telephone. When I ordered a near mint copy the rep at Mile High told me that I had to meet a minimum purchase of at least $20 dollars USD if I was paying by credit card. So, I thought about it for a second, and then knew that volume one of Cerebus was on sale at Migh High for about 19 or 20 bucks American. I had heard about Cerebus for a while and was curious what it was about. Problem solved.

I got my issue of Thor #380.

I still have this issue 25 years later. I gave up my Cerebus Phone Book though to a thrift store during the aughts.

And also received my first Cerebus phone book in the mail too. It's been downhill from there ever since.

Onto some updates.

Looks like Kathleen David and organizer Graham Murphy have been able to fully fund the GoFundMe for Kathleen's husband Peter David who has been suffering from several health complications of late.

Items for Cerebus #153

MARGARET LISS:
A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Dave Sim’s twentieth notebook covers Cerebus #153  to 164 and it had only 59 pages scanned in. The last time we saw pages from it was back in June of 2021 in Lord Julius Banter from Cerebus #164. While we’ve looked at this notebook thirteen times so far, we’ve never seen page one.

So page one opens up with some layouts and dialogue for page two of Cerebus #153, aka Flight page 48.

Notebook #20, page 1

It is close to the finished page – with the ‘Hail Cerebus!’, the long vertical panels alternating between Cerebus climbing and the Cirinists below, the diamond dialogue boxes , and Cerebus tossing his sword up on a ledge as he climbs upwards with Missy.

On the next page is a list of things to appear in the phonebook. Part of the text in the lower half of the page is from Cerebus’ speech to the citizens of Iest, though parts of it weren’t used.

 Notebook #20, page 2

The next page continues Cerebus’ speech, but not all of it is used.

Notebook #20, page 3

CIH? Signed Cover Variants

Benjamin Hobbs:

Previously it was announced that there will be $15 signed versions of CIH? books available from Diamond:

The assumption at the time was that this would be the same cover, just signed. However, because we submitted different prices, we had to submit different barcodes for these books. Having a different barcode means the cover will be a variant.  The Price has been changed on the spine of the book as well, and it's noted that it is the SIGNED EDITION:

Dave wanted to make sure the retailers know that it's a FIFTEEN DOLLAR book, so he's included this on the back cover:

The Final Order Cut Off has already passed for the JAN issue, so hopefully you placed your order with your LCS.

I faxed Dave asking him if this will be available for anyone who missed it. He sent this:

Don't send Dave a check yet! Stay tuned for more information!

Manly Matt Dow hits Splash Mountain, and a SDOAR fax about Margaret Mitchell's tragic demise

Good evening, AMOC regulars and guests!

AMOC Assistant Interim Editors Week continues!

This is Brian West again, still keeping the seat warm here until (God willing) Manly Matt Dow returns from the sun-kissed shores of the American South. In the meantime, here's a thanks to Manly that I had forgotten to give to him professionally when he posted last

Click for bigger.

Speaking of Matt: here are some new pics he took from down south.

Breer Rabbit says Hallo!

"You CAN'T run away from trouble.  . . . There Ain't NO PLACE that fer."

Breer Rabbit, Breer Fox, and Breer Bear offer some friendly advice.

Hope Matt keeps those snapshots of his holiday adventures a' coming. If he shares more pics I will most definitely share them here at the blog.

Aardvark-Vanaheim's Next-President-In-Succession Eddie Khanna was kind enough to relay to me a couple faxes from the Big Cheese himself about SDOAR and Margaret Mitchell. Lately, Dave has been studying on newspaper reports about Mrs. Mitchell's imminent passing in 1949 in Atlanta. You can read more on that below.

So, AMOCers who still support Dave on Patreon should expect to see those 24 pages very soon there.

Thanks, Eddie!

Alright, here are some reminders, big and small.

Peter David is in a bad place, but he's eligible for help from the Hero Initiative.

Cerebus the Trading Cards: The Checklist

Hi, Everybody!

I got an email Ben Hobbs:
Hey Matt!
Is there a full list of the Waverly Press Cerebus cards? I'm trying to figure out which cards came before the Form and Void cards and if I have them.
Thanks!
BH
Well, I'm nothing if not magnanimous with my underlings (QUIT THAT SNICKERING MARGARET! I goddamn AM TOO!) so here's the long awaited Cerebus the Trading card checklist:
(grouped by what's on the back of the card. And using my *incomplete* set of cards.)
  • Matt's Bootleg card set: (I made three sets of these. Based on Dave's proposed 1980s "bubblegum cards")
    1. Lord Julius
    2. Sanctum of Tarim (Serra)
    3. Map of the Military Federation of Lower Felda
  • Waverly Press Prototype Cards
    • Cerebus from the cover to #1 (Numbered "P1") two versions with differences in glossy or matte. A set of these were sent to Dave via Oslo, Norway. He signed them as "OSLO" and numbered them out of 200. I have #41.
    • Cerebus from the cover to #1 (Numbered "P2") two versions with differences in glossy or matte. Different from "P1" by a closer shot of Cerebus, and the red flames are white, and the black "sky" is red. (Maybe part of the "OLSO" cards. I dunno.)
    • Cerebus from the first page Dave ever did (Numbered "P3") three versions with differences in glossy or matte, also with variations in the printing on the back. (Possibly "OLSO"ed.)
    • Close-up of Cerebus from issue #1 (Numbered "P4") two versions with differences in glossy or matte. (Possibly "OLSO"ed.)
    • Cerebus running from issue #1 (Numbered "P5") two versions with differences in glossy or matte. (Possibly "OLSO"ed.)
  • Waverly Press Cards "DAVE SIM'S CEREBUS THE AARDVARK" on the backs
  •  "DAVE SIM'S HIGH SOCIETY" on backs
    • #5 the Regency Elf
    • #6 Cerebus in Candidate suit
    • #7 Henrot

    • #10 Cerespawn the movie

    • #12 "GLK!"
    • #13 Cerespawn gliding over the Bay
    • #14 Cerespawn "Frank Miller"
    • #15 Moody lighting

Larry Shell has made it:
Success!

I have received just enough in donations from GoFundMe and private ones to pay my property taxes!

I wasn’t sure I’d make it. To say I am flabbergasted, surprised and tickled to death would be putting it mildly! WHOOPIE!

I will be paying the entire property tax bill on Monday, December 5th as I have to wait a couple of days for the funds to transfer to my account.

This was a group effort! I could not have done it without you! Thank you to everyone who plugged my situation and link multiple times and everybody who donated and shared the link! You people are the greatest! I am not very religious, but God Bless You all!

I will be seriously reevaluating my living situation and making changes for the better in the near future. I do not ever want to do this again!

Take care and please stay safe!
Larry

Which means if you donated, let me know at momentofcerebus@gmail.com, and in a week or two, I'll pull a name out of the shiny metal helmet to receive:
Please ignore the stupid scan line.

The last one of these. (I got two left to ink.)

BIG thanks to everybody who helped out. You guys & gals REALLY step up to the plate when it counts. And AMOC just learned that Peter David is in a bad place too, but he's eligible for help from the Hero Initiative.

AND, I'm out.

I'm going away for a week's vacation.

I MIGHT be back for the Weekly Update on the 16th (planes crash, boats sink, people disappear to Tropical Paradises and never come back...) but if not, I'm leaving this joint in the capable hands of Big Brian West (ably assisted by Margaret Liss, Ben Hobbs, David Birdsong, Sean Robinson, Eddie Khanna, Dave's Strange Death of Alex Raymond Patroness (she can introduce herself. It's NOT Margaret!), and maybe Carson Grubaugh. For ASSISTANT EDITORS WEEK II!) and he'll do a bang up job, I'm sure of it.

Okay, BYYYYYE!

Next Time: Brian sobbing uncontrollably for seven days...

Dialogue from Cerebus #139

Dave Sim’s 18th notebook that he used in the creation of Cerebus covers issues #136 through 141, a bit of Jaka’s Story and a bit of Melmoth. It had 64 pages scanned and we last saw it just this past August in Notes for Cerebus #136. In August of 2017 we saw a page for Cerebus #138 that had the dialogue pretty much word for word between the two maids who were serving Jaka.

There were three more pages of dialogue after that initial page which was shown. That page covered Cerebus #139 pages 8 – 11, aka Jaka’s Story #474 – 477.

The next page with dialogue covers Cerebus #139 pages 12 – 14 and a panel of page 15. Looking at it, the two maids’ dialogue can be read as one maid has her dialogue in word balloons and the other doesn’t.

Notebook #18, page 39

As you can imagine, the next page in the book continues the conversation with the two maids, and now Corky as well, being yelled at by both maids for not having the proper marmalade spoon.

Notebook #18, page 40

Some of this dialogue isn’t used – I can’t really make out that word balloon that has been completely crossed out, all I can see is ‘he ought to be horse crapper’, though I’m not sure about that last word. The above page has dialogue for pages 15 and 16, aka Jaka’s Story #481 and 482.

The next page is the dialogue from the above page, but it is cleaned up, and finished.

Notebook #18, page 41

On the back of the page you can see the sketches of the nurses that appear in the previously mentioned post from August of 2017.
