A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.
Dave Sim’s 22nd notebook covers Cerebus #186 through 201 and had 71 pages scanned. The rest of the 80 pages the notebook started with were either blank or missing. We last saw the notebook in March of 2021 in Fun with BRGWST. I was looking through all the text heavy pages, this notebook does cover parts of Reads and Minds, and I saw this page:
Notebook 22, page 67 |
Prince Mick with either Harrison Starkey or Richard George. Since this notebook only covers the first issue of Guys, I’m going with Harrison Starkey. In the upper right corner of the page written in pencil is the dialogue “Am I addressing Mister Harrison Stark or Mister James Winston.” That is a line of dialogue from Missus Snatcher Thatcher (page 13 from Guys). But instead of James Winston she says Richard George.
The sketch of Harrison and Mick is from Guys page 12:
Guys page 12, aka Cerebus #201 page 6 |
The next page of the notebook is mostly just bleed through of the marker from the previous page.

Love that you scanned the bleed-through.
