Cerebus #145 Page Layouts

MARGARET LISS:

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

In Cerebus #141 Cover Sketch from December of 2021 we saw a page from Dave Sim’s 19th Cerebus notebook. This notebook covers the majority of Melmoth, Cerebus #141 through 149 and only had 47 pages out of 80 scanned. Most of it are sketches of the different characters who show up while Cerebus is just sitting around.

However, there are some page layouts and scripting going on.

Notebook #19, page 41

The layout and writing is for Cerebus #145 pages 8 and 9, aka Melmoth pages 136 and 137:

Melmoth pages 136 & 137

As you can see, the layout is the same from the notebook to the finished pages. . .Well, other than Gerhard’s slight modification to the background. And Reggie’s face on page 10 not being in shadow. The text is the same, word for word.
