So, here's the deal. Sean had TWENTY-FOUR SDOAR pages in CONSIGNED (not 21 like he said he was gonna have...). I'ma run three of them today. For every TWENTY-FIVE people who vote for the next chapter of Choose Your Own "Jen"venture (and not anonymously, ya gotta give me a name...even a fake one...), I'll post another page until all twenty-four are posted.

Choose Your Own "Jen"venture chapter the fourth: "Reassessment"

You take a deep inhalation of breath and prepare to scream as loud as you can when you realize how ridiculous you're being.

Jen lived here for weeks. She seemingly disappeared. There is either a clue has to how she got out, or where she might have gone.

You look in the little bedside cabinet again. Looking carefully, the bottom shelf is indeed empty. You feel around, and there's no false bottom or sides. Next you slowly and carefully pull the worn rags out one by one, checking to see that nothing's hidden in them. You don't feel or see anything in any of them. After you remove them all (folding and stacking them carefully on the floor), you check the shelf. There isn't anything that you can see, but in the back corner, you feel a bump. You don't feel any cracks or spots where something could be accessed. Thinking for a minute, you try to remove the shelf from the cabinet. it doesn't want to come out, but with a little "oomph" you get it. In the back corner, the wood has split and warped from getting wet. Looking carefully, you see something has been wedged in there. Using your fingers, you manage to pry part of the shelf away from itself and can see a small key. You shake it loose and put it in your pocket.

Putting the shelf back (as best you can), you replace the pile of rags and move up to the drawer. 

You open it and remove the small scroll and the little book with the Chinese characters and set them aside. Feeling around you don't find anything else. Bringing back the "oomph", you pull the drawer out of the cabinet. Nothing on the sides or the back. Nothing in the slot it goes into. You put the drawer back, and turn to the scroll. 

You think it looks rather old, as you slowly unroll it. The dense tightly packed handwritten letters don't seem to be in any language you speak. There seems to be a signature and seal at the bottom. You reroll and put it in your backpack. The book of Chinese writing doesn't make any sense to you and you pack that away too.

You turn to the bed. Pulling off the thin blanket and shaking it out, nothing falls out. The mattress is old, stained, and smelly. Holding your breath, you run your hands along it. It's just an old mattress. Tilting it up and checking underneath, you see some old stains, but nothing  else. You set the mattress down and put the blanket back.

You head down the steps back to the main area and pull the books off the little shelf. You take them over to the little table and sit down on the chair. You try the key in the drawer of the table and it doesn't fit. Flipping through the Pogo collection and the Joker's Jokebook, nothing out of the ordinary jumps out at you. The little book is full of densely packed scribbles that you can't quite make out.

You realize you could spend months in this cell and not figure anything out.
