The Aardvarkian Age, part 2

Hi, Everybody!

If you missed the Kickstarter for Dave and Carson Grubaugh's You Don't Know Jack, first, how? I've been talking it up since Day One. Like, I even "pulled a Kayne" and interrupted one of Hobbs posts. I did a podcast with Carson. Just, how? Anyway, IF you missed it, there's an Indiegogo. So go go Indy.

The Strange Death of Alex Raymond Fundraising Edition is coming. (I said this yesterday.)

If you missed the Waverly Press Kickstarter for the Remastered Cerebus #1, limited overflow of the rewards are available at cerebusoverload.com. New update:
Hi Matt, I just updated the site with something new. Blank Cerebus art cards. They're printed on heavy-weight 18pt. uncoated card stock. Suitable for just about any kind of pencil, ink or watercolor. You get 5 cards for $10, and supplies are VERY limited
For those keeping track, this is card No. 9 in the ongoing series of official Cerebus trading cards. Blank front for art, space for the artist signature on the back.

Cerebus masks and whatnots with all the money going to Dave. Until the end of the month, there's also "Cerebus in Hell? 4 Sell". With all the profits going to Aardvark-Vanaheim. (How that's different is a mystery...)

Speaking of Cerebus in Hell? Word on the Street is that today is the Final Order Cutoff for: Vault of Cerebus! And The "Censored for Grandma" variant: Batvark XXXXX (Okay, I heard that from Brian West on the Tweeters. But that's like a street, right?)
At the end of the month The Amicable Spider-Vark should be in stores.

Speaking of which, A Moment of Cerebus is facilitating Aardvark/Vanaheim's auctioning of a signed copy of the mis-stapled The Amicable Spider-Vark #1. As soon as I get pictures, I'll show you what it looks like, but it's signed by Dave five times with a silver sharpie that was dying, and some of them are smeared. It's a "Sandeep Atwall 1 of 5". Bidding is at $20 American dollars (plus shipping) to Margaret Liss.
Signed copies of Vark Wars: Walt's Empire Strikes Back (Signed by Dave, Signed by Dave and me, Signed by me after I scribble out Dave's name, Pretty much available Signed only...)

Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of. And unto this, Conan, destined to wear the jeweled crown of Aquilonia upon a troubled brow. It is I, his chronicler, who alone can tell thee of his saga. Let me tell you of the days of high adventure! Oops, wrong franchise.

Anyway, the Cerebus Fangirl herself, Margaret Liss sent in:
Matt -

I have two of the four Aaardvarkian Age columns that Deni's brother wrote. Figured they might make good reading on the AMoC site. At one point I had emailed Michael Loubert about hosting them on the Cerebus Wiki and he was okay with it. Now that the wiki is dead, perhaps they can go up on AMoC.

Take care,

From Issue 17:
The Aardvarkian Age
By Michael Loubert

When the T’gitans reached Fluroc the towns gates were shut. The Lord Daor Soiguinh, a Hsifan, held the town for Palnu. His heart was wroth, for he had but fifty trained men to defend the walls. These were tight cavalrymen. Their horses were slain and the meat cured in preparation for a long siege.

On the third night of the siege the T’gitans attempted a storming of the East or Sarthin Gate. They brought with them a felled tree, one end sharpened and shod in iron. They also brought with them torches, and crudely wrought ladders. When they neared the gate they raised a great shout and rushed forward.

The Lord Soiguinh, who was on the walls, heard the T’gitans’ shout and hurried over with his fifty men. He reached the gate not long after the T’gitans did, and found all the townsfolk fled away. The gate was smote upon by the beam of wood, and the crude ladders were set upon the parapets.

But the Lord Soiguinh, his mind unclouded by fear, ordered his men to cast down the ladders, and shoot upon the barbarians who manned the beam of iron-shod wood, which they did. The T’gitans, surprised at this resistance, and so dismayed, left their ladders and engines of war, and fled the gate.

But when the sun arose, the council of the townsfolk beseeched Lord Soiguinh to parlay with the barbarians without. The night assault had unnerved them, so all their thoughts were on saving their lives. The Lord Soiguinh refused, but the council exclaimed they would kill the Lord and his men, and open the gates themselves, if he did not do as they said.

So at mid-day the East Gate was opened and Lord Soiguinh and the council walked out under a flag of truce, into the camp of the barbarians. And when these were in the camp, and, it is presumed, deep in council with the T’gitan chiefs they were all slain, and the East Gate rushed by T’gitan horsemen. These held the open gate for their footmen to enter.

The town was sacked, and the larger part of the townsfolk put to the sword. A few escaped south, to spread the tale of woe.

There seems to be some overlapping in fandom, something I have an especial interest in; comics and war-gaming. Below is a listing, set according to the WRG Rules (Ancients) of the armies of Palnu end T’gita. The percentages are approximate.

Palnu:
Pikemen: ‘reg C’ HI pike, shield 50%
Peltasts: ‘reg C’ LMI javelins shield 10%
Conniptin Merc.: ‘irreg C’ LMI javelins, shield 10%
Light Inf.: ‘reg C’ LI bow, shield, 10%
Palnin Cav.: ‘reg C’ HC Kontos, shield, 10%
Cihnic Cav.: ‘reg B’ HC gavelins, shield, 5%
Hsifan Merc: ‘irreg. C’ LC bow, shield 5%

T’Gita
Warriors: ‘irreg C’ LMI javelins, shield. 80%
Skirmishers: ‘irreg C’ LI javelins, shield 10%
Cavalry: ‘irreg B’ MC javelins, shield. 10%

For miniatures I would use early Germans with a sprinkling of early Goths for the T’gitans.

The Palnin are a bit more difficult. Successor phalangites, peltasts and psiloi might do for the regular foot, celts for the Conniptins, Carolingians for the HC and Huns or Mongols for the Hsifans.

Thanks Margaret!

Thanks Michael!

Next Time: Hobbs! And no "Kanyes" I swear!

Thanks for posting these oddities from the early days of Cerebus. I think these are pretty cool because these are the only times I can think of when Dave allowed someone else to attach his name to any of the writing in the main book. I wonder if Dave is still O.K. with the content of these “Aardvarkian Ages,” or if he now looks at these like George Lucas looks at that Christmas Special. I guess a third possibility is that he just doesn’t care. Finally, does anyone know what the hell phalangites, peltasts, and psiloi are?

"For those keeping track, this is card No. 9 in the ongoing series of official Cerebus trading cards"

What are cards 6-8?

Cards 1-5 were the Kickstarter/Cerebusoverload series ("Cerebus 1 Remastered set", I guess).

Card 9 is the "Blank Cerebus Art Card"

6?
7?
8?

Maybe the OSLO card is one of them?

It seems clear that, at the time, Mr. Loubert's mini-histories were what would now be called "canon" in the Cerebus "universe" - I guess to rephrase john g.'s question, "Are these synopses still Estarcion 'canon?' " And how pathetic is is if I care?

Cards 1-4 were of Cerebus, 5-7 were unlocked as part of the Kickstarter, card 8 is a preview of High Society: The Regency Edition (see Monday's post).

In the CAN9 notes (coming soon to a Kickstarter near you) Dave briefly mentions Michael Loubert and his Aardvarkian Age writings. I'm pretty certain they are canon as Dave used them as a building block for the story as it got going beyond just single issue gags.

CAN9 is coming! Hooray!
