FUNNY COVERS FOR DAVE

Hi, Everybody!

Got a Fax from Dave:

Which means that the Fellas and I are going to Return (once again) to Matt's House of Horrible Ideas...

I sent the Fellas and Dave a checklist of the covers Marvel used to make there Marvel Zombies covers (since there's a lot of Iconic covers used, some by CiH? (Denoted with a Cerebus head.).):

I also sent the "Most Valuable Comics" cards from the first Marvel Comics trading card series. (For the same reason, and with the same Denotion...):

So, if you're the creative type, or can at least describe what you mean, you can suggest a Cerebus in Hell? Cover.

You might even end up like Gary Boyarski (who is running a Kickstarter for his book Jack Grimm.):

Gary suggested Teenage Mutant Ninja Cerebi, and is forever enshrined in Cerebus Fandom as the guy who suggested Teenage Mutant Ninja Cerebi.

Forever...

If you wanna get in on this Hot Cerebus Action...

(Say, that's not that bad an idea for a title. Go look at some Kirby romance books, and find a cover that goes with it. Or mash-up a Kirby romance book with a Kubert War book...)

...and send it to me, or Hobbs, or Birdsong. (My email is momentofcerebus@gmail.com. Not sure which one they want you to use.)

Here's a few of my (possibly) rejected Horrible Ideas (click for bigger, no idea HOW bigger, I didn't resize these for the Blog...):

To give you an idea of how low the bar is set.

Feel free to try to punch up one of those, or come up with something on your own.

If it's funny enough, you too could be forever enshrined in Cerebus Fandom as the guy who suggested an idea that got made into a book, Like Gary.

Just imagine it:

Welp,

DC actually did a riff on the title of a porn film?!?

I have to say, I'm amazed at the longevity of the whole CIH? project.

Not my cuppa tea, but clearly a 'toybox' that's provided plenty of fans an opportunity to be creative, which I'm all for.

Thanks Manly,

Hulk 340, Daredevil 179, X-Men 141 and Captain America 1 have been, at least tentatively, chosen for covers. DD179 is finished as as an alternate cover to Giant-Size Public Defenders, June 2022. Dave has been messing with Captain America 1 based on a Sean Robinson suggestion. The other two have rough versions started by Benjamin Hobbs.

At least two of Manly's ideas are also in the early stages, Avengers 57 and Kamandi 1.

There's probably several more I can't think of right now.

Forgive me is this has been discussed here before but what is keeping CIH? from opening up and including other characters from Cerebus The Aardvark?

Certainly some of those characters would have ended up in Hell as it's conceived of in CIH? Certainly some of these characters are archetypical or original enough to work well in a four panel comic strip. Certainly there are a handful of poses of some of these characters within the 6000 pages of Cerebus that could be lifted and used as cut-outs.

Why not a Lord Julius or the Three Wise Guys cover? Why not an Elrod The Albino cover? Why not Boobah & Bear? Richard & Harrison? Oscar & Oscar? Marty? I haven't run out of characters based on other characters or real people yet, to say nothing of the plethora of absolutely original and well developed characters Dave created.

It may be that covers featuring the former will generate cease & dissent letters, but Dave's been down that road before and it certainly doesn't stop the publication in question from being sold, at least once. Perhaps covers featuring these latter would be less "commercial" than covers featuring the more visually recognizable likenesses.

For my money, any of the characters I mentioned and dozens of ones I did not would be welcome at least between the covers of CIH? If Dave hasn't expressly forbidden it then I don't understand why the possibility isn't on the table.

I might even cough up the scratch for HC CIH?s.

I remain waiting to be schooled,

Michael, my understanding, and it comes from Dave (but not necessarily carved in stone?), is that Cerebus is in a singular hell. He won't see anyone from his life in the Infernal Realms. If I could introduce characters from the original Cerebus series, I would. I tried it with Jaka when we did the Swamp Thing parody but she turned out to be a Like-A-Look.

Cerebus is being punished and maybe us too.

It's my own personal belief that the reason everyone in the Infernal Realms says "@#$%" instead of real curses is because you aren't allowed to curse in hell(?). It would be too satisfying as a relief, so all that comes out is a difficult to pronounce white noise kind of thing.

We all have ideas about what we're doing up to a point, but Cerebus In Hell? isn't Fan Fiction just yet, Dave is involved with every page and he makes the rules.

Possibly an "Ask Dave Sim..." question (and it's possible it's been answered and I missed it)...

It's been mentioned in a few off-hand comments...But...

What SDOAR is Dave working on?

Bill Ritter,

Dave's working on volumes 3-5. (Researching mostly. But, also mocking up pages, I believe.)

Ah, finally some infamy! It's not much I will take it. We did this cover search a few years back and it was a heck of alot of fun. I'm pretty busy with JACK GRIMM these days, But I will see what I can conjure up.

P.S. My wife got me to shave off the 'stache.
