This Man, This Carrot

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

It was November of 2021 in Cerebus #102: Good Abbess Text Not Used when we last saw Dave Sim’s twelfth notebook. That notebook had 133 pages scanned in and covers Cerebus #102 through #11 (though it does have some prep work for Jaka’s story near the end of it as well). Looking through it I saw some Flaming Carrot items. 

Like a Dave Sim Flaming Carrot and a sketch for the cover to Cerebus #104 on page 18:

That looks a bit more action packed than the finished cover. The next time we see Flaming Carrot in this notebook is some dialogue for page five on page 28 of the notebook:

Then on the next page of the notebook are some thumbnails for pages 15 through 17 of Cerebus #104 along with some dialogue.

But wait, we’re seeing all of these Dave Sim drawn Flaming Carrots, what about a Bob Burden drawing of Cerebus? Well, here you go:

I’m pretty sure the text at the top is by Dave, but I’m even more sure that the blue inked Cerebus in a car and the text ‘cerebus buys a datsun’ is by Bob Burden.
