Got an Update from the Waverly Press about their Form & Void:

Greetings,

This will be one of the final updates for Form & Void.

As of today we have dispatched about 2/3 of the pledge packages and the last of them will be shipped over the next few days.

Some of you should have already received your books and we welcome any feedback that might help us improve the next one.

A bit of bad news. The printer that was to produce the micro-Cerebus #1 books has pushed back delivery again and now can't finish them until at least February. The delay is primarily due to supply chain problems with the materials related to the slabs. To those of you who added these to your pledges, we are refunding the full cost of the micro books and we will include something extra in your package which will hopefully make up for not getting them.

We do intend to offer the micro-Cerebus #1 when the printer can commit to a delivery date.

Thank you for your support and keep an out for our next Kickstarter projects which are the remastered Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 and the Cerebus: The Last Day deluxe hardcover!

Hello friends,

I hope you’re all having a wonderful fall! Here in Saint Paul we seemed to have skipped fall entirely. A few short weeks with trees dropping leaves, and then poof, we’re suddenly in a snow-covered landscape. My kids are thrilled. Their bus driver, not so much!

First off, I wanted to thank all of you who pledged for or shared links to our presale for The Exile. I’ve already started moving forward on printing all of the extras for the campaign. The book itself is prepared and only awaiting initial orders from our distributor the first week of December, and then it’s off to press! We’re now shifting gears to promoting the book for its eventual comic shop and book store release. Based on the inquiries I’ve received, we should have some exciting high-profile reviews and interviews coming along as we get closer to the release of the book in late January/early February.

Speaking of interviews… Here’s a brand new one with Erik Kriek, Exile author, conducted by Troy Allen for PreviewsWorld! An excellent talk focused on the broader themes of The Exile.

And speaking of PreviewsWorld… they also have an interview live now with the author/cartoonist of the upcoming Living the Line title, Centralia!

Well, if THAT’s not enough for you [mercy, Sean, have mercy on us!], the second issue of Abolition of Man is out in comic shops today! If the reaction to the first issue is any indication, this one will likely sell out quickly, so I would pick it up sooner rather than later. The issue was written by Carson, and illustrated by MidJourney AI back in mid June, and extrapolates out from the concerns of the first issue to the Featureless Future, where human activity has lost all meaning. And yet it’s not as bleak a read as that might make it seem :) A project that Carson and I are both thrilled with, the second and third issues take certain art comics standbys to their logical expressionistic extremes. Not to be missed.

Lastly, I thought you might all enjoy this recent interview on the Living the Line Youtube channel, with Carson Grubaugh in discussion with the another great comics formalist, Tommi Musturi. Lots of fascinating discussion of style and purpose in art making.

As I stated a couple of days ago, I did NOT raise the amount I needed to pay my property taxes by the deadline, which was Nov. 10th.

I spoke with the local tax office today and was thankfully able to get an extension until the end of the month. Hopefully that will allow me to raise the balance needed.

The Fifty-Second Step

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

Another week of looking at Dave Sim’s seventh notebook used in the creation of Cerebus. It covers Cerebus #59 through 69 and had 160 pages scanned in. . .and so far we’ve only seen 37 of those pages. 

Page 46 is pretty busy. A couple of issue number boxes, but #62 is repeated. Upper left corner has some women’s names crossed out: Deni, Sally, Sheila, Linda, Karen, and Robyn.  And a couple more not crossed out: Janet and Jean. There are a couple of potential issue titles: “The Birth of Politics” and “The Politics of Birth”. 

Notebook #7, page 46

Dave also lists out the potential characters to show up in Cerebus #62, but only Duke Leonardi, Lord Julius, Theresa, and Weisshaupt show up. Though with the other notes in the lower half of the page are for Cerebus #64, the discussion between Weisshaupt and Powers. It isn’t the same as the finished dialogue, just contains some of the same bits.

The next page of the notebook continues with the Weisshaupt and Powers dialogue.

It also has some quotes that only “Anything done for the first time unleashes a daemon” shows up later. Kind of. I one which Suenteus Po versions said that.

We want to apologize for the long delay getting this one finished. The printer struggled with the widespread paper shortage and even had a difficult time securing the cloth and foil blocks. We are modifying our production plan for the next deluxe Cerebus book which should (hopefully) minimize delays on the next one.
