Thumbnails for Cerebus #99 Part 5

A few years ago I scanned all of Dave Sim's notebooks. He had filled 36 notebooks during the years he created the monthly Cerebus series, covering issues #20 to 300, plus the other side items -- like the Epic stories, posters and prints, convention speeches etc. A total of 3,281 notebook pages detailing his creative process. I never really got the time to study the notebooks when I had them. Just did a quick look, scanned them in and sent them back to Dave as soon as possible. So this regular column is a chance for me to look through those scans and highlight some of the more interesting pages.

One last look (for now?) at Dave Sim’s eleventh Cerebus notebook. Last week was part four of looking at page thumbnails for Cerebus #99, and now we’ve got the thumbnails for pages #18 and 19:

Notebook #11, page 81
Yes, click for bigger, as always

Yes, we skipped a page. Again. Last week when we looked at the thumbnails for pages #16 and 17 it was from notebook page #79. Just like how page 78 was blank and not scanned in, so was page 80.

The main difference when viewing the thumbnails and the finished page is Gerhard’s background for the pages. The first panel’s background becomes the background for the double page spread, and then the small backgrounds for each panel.

Cerebus #99 pages 18 & 19, aka Church & State II pages 974 & 975

The other difference is the dialogue. Down the bottom we see more than what made the finished page. And even the word balloons in the thumbnail don’t match up with the finished page. But overall, those thumbnails are pretty dang close to the finished page.
